RE: Madiso Towers (111 Park Street)
I agree with the fair-handed assessment provided by the 2L law student. There is a large law-school and med-school community here. Occasionally they turn the water off, which affects the heating/cooling system as well. Very inconvenient when you?re trying to shower and get to class or work on time. Also, there are mice here (probably like most apartments) and some terrible bugs. Invest in air-tight containers for all of your herbs/spices and other products. It?s completely frustrating.
However, current staff are wonderful. Doormen are friendly and the maintenance staff are helpful and trustworthy. Maintenance requests are tended too promptly.
Apartments are more expensive the higher in the building they go, but the ?view? you are paying for consists of a bunch of other tall buildings. The 70?s era style has much to be desired, and the former staff did a lousy job on a last-minute cleaning before we moved in--painting over light switches, electric outlets, dirty walls; and waxing a dirty floor, etc. Now it?s impossible to keep clean. Closet doors constantly come off the track, but maintenance always repairs them (avg. once a month--no kidding). Excited to move out, but overall it?s a decent place to live.
The location is awesome--10 minute walk to law school, and it?s safe which is important in New Haven. It?s close to all of the good restaurants, etc. here. Rent is payable via direct withdrawal from checking account which is a nice feature. The rent has gone up a lot in the time we?ve been here--appx. $100 in 3 years--as has parking (from $40 to 50 for top-tier of parking garage; $10 more for lower/covered level though top level is better lit and seems safer). Gate to garage is often broken (open for anyone to come in). Increased costs have not bought us any improvements in apartment or parking garage. Am one-time victim of frequent car break-ins in our garage, so beware. Though, this is a great location to live if you don?t have a car; everything you need is close (Walgreen?s right next door). Laundry room downstairs often has broken dryers; costs have also gone up with no improvements ($1.75 washer, $1.50 dryer).
Thick, solid walls keep your place quiet, and though there?s a ?no pet? policy, you can discretely keep your feline friend here. Bring floor lamps; living rooms and bedrooms have no overhead lights. Outdoor pool is nothing fancy, but it?s really clean (and cold!), a great respite if you?ll be here through the summer. Overall, the location and community are the selling points here.
