bugs were not the main problem

dear prospective tenant:

first i did not have a bug infestation problem as outlined by the other reviews.
that being said, i would argue that with briarwood, you get what you pay for:

-the community is away from a noisy street however buildings constructed in the
1960's (look nice) but have thin walls. therefore, interapartment noise is
frequent.
-since the walls are thin, the temperature is very difficult to control and the
heating/cooling units are less than adequate to solve the problem. i lived on
one of the "top apartments" which had a terrible draft (deadly in the winter
EVEN after sealing the window cracks with pliable insulation and plastic.
unfortunately the summer was not any better: 1 window equals no circulation. i
had a thermometer than in the winter averaged 40-50. summer 80-90.
-the staff was less than prompt in responding to my concerns (it took 1 year
for installing blinds, weeks for light fixtures, weeks for washer/dryer). their
own contractors for scheduled maintenance would leave more than a mess for one
to clean after their departure.

these are things which were negative.

on the positive side it is a quiet cheap community close to new haven and the
surrounding suburbs.

after not being able to tolerate the inconveniences outlined above, i moved.
during my search for a new apartment, many apartment managers and apartment
rental agencies gave me sympathetic looks when i informed them i lived at
briarwood hills (some laughed, shook their head, and had their own horror
stories to tell). if you do not believe me, try it for yourself!

therefore, if your budget allows for an extra $100-200/month, i sincerely think
you can get more for your money in the hamden area (lots of apartments near
skiff). think twice about the level of reviews on this website (and compare the
average scores/comments to the many other options you have available to you)

I had the bug problem along with everything else. I lived in the bottom unit and I experienced a noisy ceiling right over my head/bedroom (this is tough when you work nights and weekends). I also had a terrible draft during the winter months. I installed plastic insulation on both windows and patio door but my heating bill was still extremly high this past winter. I've complained to the management several times about replacing the heating/cooling unit and had no response. I recently experienced a water pipe leak behind my dishwasher which took management 2 days to find plus, they couldn't find the water shutoff valve for the building. It's time for me to go and find a better place. If anyone out there is searching for a new place - DON'T CALL BRIARWOOD.
