a pretty nice place except for a few things

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2008
Been living at Whitewood Pond going on 3 years. Over all, my roomate and I really do like the place. The grounds are always very well taken care of EXCEPT for the gross algae that accumulates on the smaller pond. This attracts many bugs and when it gets really hot/humid, it produces a tad of an odor. I think this problem would be easily taken care of if they install a fountain in the smaller pond like they have in the larger one. Besides that, the grounds are always very well maintained. Rent went up once in the 3 years that we've been here, which really isnt that bad at all.
The office manager Karen, is a delight to work with. She is always kind and courteous and tries to help you in any way she can. The landlord however, is a completely different story. He is rude and very uncaring. A few times, i had gone to him with a few problems because Karen was on vacation, and all i got from him was an attitude. This guy is such a jerk that on more than one occasion i had passed him in the parking lot walking, and when i said hello, he walked by with no response. It's a good thing he's not here that often or I'm sure many would complain. His business attitude leaves MUCH to be desired.
Maintenance staff is great. A few times i had minor problems and they are always very quick to respond. I have never had to wait longer than 30 mins for service when i call maintenance which is great.
The insides of the apartments are pretty spacious. The living rooms in all the apartments, are quite large and gives tenants plenty of room to entertain. Every apartment also has a dining area which my roomate and I love because eat in kitchens just dont seem to work out as well when entertaining. The bedrooms are very large....and ours is almost TOO large. We kind of wish they made the bedrooms a little smaller and the kitchens a tad larger.
On to the kitchen...it is very very small. We knew this when we moves in and we weren't happy about it at first. Being a chef, i was a little concerned that i wouldnt be able to adapt to cooking in such a small area. The fridge is a good size as is the dishwasher, but the oven and stove are very small. After a few months, i learned to adapt to the kitchen and now we have entertained up to 17 people with no problems. The cabinet space is MINIMAL, however, there is a food storage cabinet that helps greatly. Without that, I have no idea where we would have stored our groceries. The cabinets in the kitchen are very old and are crying to be redone or remodeled..they look like the same cabinets that were installed when the building was built.
The bathroom is just that...a bathroom. Nothing fancy and not huge...good enough though for 1-2 people.
Since we have moved in, the parking lot/driveway, has been repaved 3 times. People in the apartment building are wondering why the landlord is choosing to waste money on the parking lot (which has been fine since the day we moved in), instead of spending money on making the place look a bit nicer. For instance...the carpets in the entryways of the apartments are old, stained, and very unattractive. Some cheaper but newer carpeting, would make all the difference. Also, the bathroom floors in the apartments are very old...and even cracked. It wouldnt cost that much to buy some generic linoleum and lay it down in everyones bathrooms...that too, would make a huge difference in appearance. The carpeting IN the apartments are also very old and cheap looking. I can understand them not wanting to buy expensive carpeting, but if they can find some cheap but decent carpet, it would really make the apartments look more modern. The cabinets as i've said, need to be replaced and the stove/ovens are VERY VERY OLD. If they spent less money on the parking lot/driveway, and more money on the above mentioned things, this apartment would be an A .
The windows are very drafty and our livingroom window has been leaking since the day we moved in. Maintenace tried hard to fix the leak, but have no idea where it's coming from. Also, because the windows are so drafty, it becomes pricey to heat in the winter. Luckily there is a seperate thermostat in every room so that helps a bit.
As for noise...it's very quiet which is great. All the apartments are 1 bedroom so there really arent any kids which keeps things quiet. We've been lucky with neighbors and have never had any issues with noise even though others have said the walls are thin.
The parking lot is huge...parking is never an issue and it's very well lit and safe.
Over all we do like Whitewood Ponds but would like it even more if they made some minor upgrades.
