I've lived here 6 months now and I really have no complaints. I have a 1st floor apartment with a patio, that overlooks the pond and big trees (and ducks and geese!) - I love sitting out there - choosing an apartment with an outdoor space definitely sold me. The sliding doors onto the patio are great and let in so much light.
Everyone that comes over is suprised that the size of the place - I have one of the smaller units and it really is big for a one bedroom apartment. I seriously don't know what I would do with the extra space if I moved into one of the bigger ones upstairs. The bedroom and living room are HUGE - great for having friends over, especially since there is a seperate dining room. The kitchen is SMALL, but I knew that moving in, and I'm fine with it - there is still lots of cabinets/storage space so it works for me. If I had once complaint I'd say I'd like newer appliances (a better dishwasher maybe), but really, it's not a luxury apartment, and if I wanted those things I would be paying alot more. The appliances work and they were spotless (actually everything was spotless) when I moved in. Even the bathroom was great, nothing was dirty. It was freshly painted white when I moved in, and the carpets are a dark color.
I like the way the apartments are laid out so that everyone's bedroom is on the same side - I literally have never heard my neighbors in my bedroom. Once in a while I've heard someone in my living room but it's really rare, it seems like the walls are well insulated. Someone mentioned loud noises at 5-6 am - I can't really comment on that cause I sleep like the dead. A couple of times I've heard the garbage trucks come to empty the dumpsters and that involves some bangs but it doesn't wake me up & I'm not sure what time it's at. If you do hear it it's because the dumpsters are closer to your apartment (literally before the parking spots) than at most places I've lived, which is nice for someone like me who is completely lazy at taking out the garbage - I toss it in on my way to work.
The parking lot looks small but there are always close spots so there must be more spaces than it seems. I've never had to park outside the row right in front of me, for myself or my guests. It has felt safe to me here, if there's been any theft issues I have not heard of them. I live alone and I come home late alot on the weekends and I've never had an issue - it's always well-lit and quiet in the parking lot/apartments when I get home.
One thing I really like about this place is that it is all one-bedroom units. I'm 26 and I work alot, so I like that I live in a place without screaming children when I get home at the end of the day. The most children I've seen are couples with one small child since there are no second bedrooms. It seems to be a majority of young singles, some roomates, couples, and some older people, so it's been really nice and quiet here.
I looked at other aparments on State St for about $50 less (Briarwood) and that looked like the kind of aparment I would find on my old college campus - where as this feels like a place "grown-ups" live, rather than frat boys. It had a really nice management office, but the apartments themselves were too run down for me. Yeah they had a pool, but it didn't look like one I'd want to use, and the gym was really small.
The landscaping and grounds at Whitewood are really nice, in fact I was suprised, it's alot nicer than I would expect for it's price range.
I HATE bugs, and I haven't had any problems so far. This was an important issue for me when I was looking for an apartment. I had mice in my last apartment and it traumatized me - so I'm happy to report none here!
The electric bill has not been an issue for me, but I do keep my heat on pretty low in the winter (I'm always hot). I have been using my air alot these last few months and my electric bill has not gone up as much I expected (highest was $125, rest were under $100), so that was a nice surpise.
The bottom line for me - the apartments are old, but they are clean and well maintained. I love the layout, the size, and the quality I've had so far here. Last month was the first time I've had a maintenance issue - my dishwasher broke - I called the office in the morning when I was at work and it was fixed when I got home that night. I only see management when I drop off my rent. I would definitely stay here if I was content in North Haven, but I really don't love it, so I'll probably move closer to the beach or downtown New Haven.
Oh, and they don't allow dogs, but I have two cats.
This site seems to attract complainers, so I thought it would be good to share a positive experience.

I know it's hard to believe that someone could actually rent and be happy... but I actually don't work for management... would you like an e-mail from my work address? I'd be happy to contact you...
