What did you expect, the Ritz '

Reading through the posts on this site, there seem to be a couple of people with a real grudge out there. I wonder whether they live at the same 'century hills' on Cold Spring Rd that I live at. Most of the posts here are rather slanderous in nature, I don't see that they are based in fact. The bizarre 'everything is great and the people are beautyful' posts otoh are undoubtedly from one of the management girls.
The place is nothing spectacular. The 'Luxury Living' label they give themselves is definitely not deserved.
I live here for almost a year now and compared with some of the holes I have seen around here in CT, it doesn't compare so badly.
The complex is one of the better 70s vintage places I have seen. I live in one of the smaller units toward the back of the complex. I can't comment on the conditions in the high-rises. At the time I opted for the cheaper older units in the back and never regretted it. Although I rented one of the 'basic' units, when I moved in it turned out that all the appliances except for the dishwasher had been updated (the dishwasher however needs replacing badly, it leaks and just doesn't clean stuff).
In the lowrises, heating is included in the bill. It is a furnace/forced hot water system which works well for me. AC is provided through a couple of wall units. The one in the 'master' bedroom was christened 'icestorm', the one in the living room is known as 'old smelly'. In the second bedroom I had a little low-noise window unit (illegally) which did a good job in keeping me comfortable during the few days it gets toasty here in the Northeast.
The maintenance guy is quick to show up and friendly, but somehow he just doesn't get too much done. But after some bugging things did get fixed to my standards.
I keep my contact to management to a minimum and drop my check in time to see it clear before the due date. (When they didn't present it in time once, I dropped by to make sure that they had it.)
As for security, I don't know what to think. I do see Rocky Hill PD more often around here than I care for. otoh, there are probably a couple of 1000 people living here. In a rental 'community' you will always have your fair share of wife-beaters and substance abusers. Nothing new here. At night, there is a security guard with a little subcompact who makes his rounds. For whatever it's worth.
They are a bit slow to plow the snow in the winter. The concept of shoveling and sanding the walkways is also remote to them. A good number of the IT folks living here drive corollas and are from a corner of the world that doesn't see too much snow. As a result some of them struggle to get up the hills in the morning (I drive an old rear-wheel drive car with worn out summer tires and for some reason don't have any trouble with this.)
Yes, it is close to I91. The area I live in is behind a large sound barrier, so the noise level from the highway is not that bad (my wife-beating, chain smoking, classic rock loving neighbour is a different story). The upside of being close to the highway is direct access to the I91/CT9 interchange. This gives me fast access to the places I need to get to (e.g. you can make it to northern NJ in less than two hours).
I just went to one of the outdoor pools in the summer a couple of times. Can't comment on the amenities otherwise. The laundry room in my unit is well maintained. It has one of these smart-card systems which works for me.
In summary:
It's a freaking rental. I didn't expect the Ritz, and I didn't get it. I work pretty long hours and travel many of the weekends. It is a place to sleep and change.
Would I move here again:
If I was in the same situation I was a year ago, yes.
Would I recommend it to a friend:
If you know what to expect you don't get all too unsettled about little details.

For a thousand dollars a month I expect more than bugs and old buildings.
