It's a nice place, but you can definately find better....

A few things that I think people should watch out for:
1) I was single, then got engaged, married, and moved my wife up here with me. They charged my wife a $100 application fee so she could APPLY to live with me. First off, she's my wife, secondly, she should NOT have to apply to live with me. Get her name on my lease... yes. Should that require $100 so some schmuck can pen her name in on my lease, nope.
2) Noise levels: When I'm trying to get some sleep, I'm rudely awakend by the staff emptying out the dumpsters in the morning. In fact, with every window closed, my head under the pillow, its still loud. They also schedule this around 7:30-8:30 in the morning.
3) When we moved in, the carpet was NOT cleaned prior to our move-in, and our cabnets were already falling apart. We had to have both showers fixed due to extremely low water pressure. But, maintenance... seems to be the only plus in this community. They're really helpful, and always resolve the matter at hand.
4) Some of the office staff get very ugly at times, or just ignore the fact you're standing outside the office door waiting for help. In addition, a few times, staff would not get my packages (when it was daytime, and no concierge was around). The "other" office staff (and they know who they are), are very helpful ...and would probably give you the shirt off their back if you really needed it.
5) Visitor parking was once an issue, a REALLY REALLY REALLY BIG issue, but they have seemed to correct that, so bravo on them for that.
6) The gym is nothing to be proud of. Walk across the street to Avalon Greyrock's gym... its phenominal. In addition, you're only allowed access to the gym during certian hours, and after that they lock up shop. Having the gym open for people who actually work ...or at least increasing the hours, would be great.
7) Wireless internet available to residents at a cheaper rate than normal cable / dsl access. The wireless signal there is crap, and the connection speeds you get are even worse. At times you'd swear you were on dialup. Their kiosk computers are horrid, and spyware ridden, and probably never updated.
Some things I commend them on:
- Concierge - most of them remember your name, and are very friendly/helpful.
- Inside courtyard, is really nice and well kept.
- Maintenance - is probably the best maintenance I have ever dealt with. Its a shame I can't say that for the rest of the community.
Overall, I would not recommend anyone I knew to stay in the Avalon Communities based on my experience with this one. Its well worth doing your research / contacting a realtor and finding out what they have. I have to say I've learned my lesson on this one.
