I've lived in Mount Vernon for 5 years and have been, for the most part, lucky. Yes, like most 40 yr old apts, the basement isn't stellar, the hallways aren't sparkling, and some of the appliances are older. Storage areas are a good size and well lit. One major issue I did have was the $300 non-refundable "deposit" to have a cat accepted. There was a problem with some of the old maintenance crew, but the newer crew is usually very responsive and available 24 hours for ANYTHING (like the time my stove buzzer got stuck and wouldn't turn off after hours). The grounds look spectacular and the staff watches for loitering. The people who run the office are just as curt as in any other rental office I have dealt with, but are usually helpful in most cases. Either way, this place is still the best deal in town. It's quiet and off the main road and is well lit with ample extra parking. Neighbors are nice. $1 wash/dry in basement, and heat and hot water is included. I'm paying about $200-$300 LESS than anywhere else in my area. This is a safe apartment for a single girl, which is not that easy to find in the vernon/rockville area.
