Beware of the model apartment!

When my boyfriend and I looked at Knollwood, they had a great leasing agent (very friendly and helpful - unfortunately, she's no longer there). The model apartment that we looked at was very nice. The actual apartment was not nearly as nice. There were numerous problems that I wrote up in a memo to management (so I wouldn't get blamed for them when I moved out). Scratched and shabby countertops, bad flooring, blinds that had been repaired with Scotch tape. Maintenance was poor -- they often left stuff lying around the yards -- trash, ladders, etc. To fix the 3/8" gap between my vanity and the wall, Knollwood's "carpenter" nailed down a hastily-cut (and poorly-cut)piece of quarter-round wood moulding -- it was primed, but he didn't even bother to paint it. Just one example of their shoddy "workmanship."

The walls and floors are very thin, and the apartments are laid out with bedrooms adjacent to hallways. This might not seem like a problem until you are awakened at 2am by a metal door slamming shut, followed by feet pounding up the metal and concrete stairs. Also, the dumpsters are unenclosed and situated right in the middle of parking lots -- not only are they unsightly, but they attract skunks, raccoons, and god-knows-what-else. They aren't emptied often enough, so they often overflow and people put bags of garbage next to the dumpsters. Management figures that scolding tenants (via memo) will fix the problem, but it doesn't. Parking is a perennial problem, unless you're the self-important snowplow guy, who has his own special (illegal) parking spot, even when there's no snow (apparently the rules don't apply to him).

I moved out in April, and management was very slow to return my deposit. Finally, when I sent a letter (certified mail) reminding them of the Connecticut state statute on rent deposits, they sent a check (2 weeks late, with no explanation for their tardiness).

I would not recommend Knollwood, but if you do move in, be sure to DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT! Good luck!
