Here's the goods...

Rent:

The apartments are slightly more expensive than other complexes in the area, but they're not outrageous, and are in a better location.

Appearance:

Although the grounds are well-kept, and the area is always spotless and uneventful, it's not exactly a country club.

This may be due to the fact that the complex is currently renovating and remodeling many of the buildings. Right now the hallway walls for some buildings have repair marks, the wooden banisters for the stairs are in need of refinishing, and many of light fixtures are in the process of being re-wired.

Security:

The claim of a "gated community" is not entirely true. But this may have been the only way to get listed as a private-entrance complex, because the buildings each require keyed entry or a buzz from the apartment to gain access to the main hallway of each building.

Location:

The area around the complex is a very upscale neighborhood with beautiful lakes, parks, and farmlands within walking distance, which I'm surprised the complex doesn't mention more. The drive to the downtown area is equally nice, and likely worth the extra cost of rent.

Noise:

The tenants seem to be a mix of mostly young students and business professionals. It's been extremely quiet the entire time I've been here. In the rare instances of arguments or boisterous behavior, the only time I've heard anything, even during loud arguments, are the times when I walk directly past neighboring doors while on the way to my own unit. Even then it's fairly muffled. That's it. The floors do seem a little squeak-prone, but that's common.

Traffic:

The complex isn't located near i-91, it is directly beside it, and it does take some getting used to the traffic noise. But after a week or so you'll barely notice it, and there are enough trees between the highway and the parking lot to mask most of the visibility to the highway, so it doesn't detract from the view. The exit is also fast-moving, and I've yet to ever see a traffic jam in the area.

Maintenance:

There only seems to be one or two maintenance persons, but they're very helpful and will get what you need fixed if you call the office.

Gym:

There's a pool, a play area, an older tennis/basketball court, and a gym. The gym isn't huge, but it includes a lot of very useful, very modern equipment. Both the gym and pool do seem to be monitored, but according to the lease, it's only recorded, not a "live feed" for someone to sit there and watch. I'd assume this is for security purposes, but if the previous poster thinks otherwise, they should report it to the office and the authorities.

Although the complex advertises running trails at apartments.com, no one seems to be able to point out where they are located, if they do exist. Many residents run in the adjacent neighborhood, but no one seems to know anything about the trails.

Overall, the well-kept grounds, good location, and good-looking recent renovations make Southwind a very comfortable location.

But you're paying to be in a nice side of town, not because you're going to live in a country club.
