Brooksyde apartments synonymous with break-ins and low security

I do not recommend dealing with the management and renting an apartment at Brooksyde apartments. There have been a rash of break-ins started in the spring/summer of 2008 and continuing currently in the Fall of 2008. The apartments are very insecure and the management is unwilling to do anything to improve the safety of the residents aside from asking the West Hartford police to drive through the complex on a daily basis (note: the management company does not have to pay for this service). The management is unwilling to spend any money to improve the buildings that were built in the 1940's. Each building consists of 4 apartment units. The outside doors to each building DO NOT LOCK. The back and front doors to each unit are INTERIOR HOLLOW DOORS and can be kicked in/punched through very easily. I have never seen a door like this used for an exterior door. The management is making up one excuse after another as to why she can't have the doors replaced or install locks on the doors to the buildings.

There are also many hidden fees that you don't hear about during your tour as a prospective tenant including a $250 non-refundable "move-in fee". Apparently this fee covers improvements made to the apartment before you move in such as paint and cleaning. The apartment was painted and cleaned before we moved in however this is normally paid for by the management company and not by you.

The apartment unit that you are shown as a prospective tenant is not the unit that you will move in to. The management will tell you that you cannot see the actual apartment that you will move into because it not yet vacant which sounds reasonable. On move in day, many people have realized that the unit they were shown was not representative (larger, more appliances, closet space) that the unit to which they were assigned.
