Long but Helpful: Resident of 1 and 2 bedroom apartment

I moved into a one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend when we were expecting our son. When we moved in they seemed nice and accomodating and we were excited to be able to afford a "west hartford" apartment with a nice view of the park. We were satisfied (except for the constant curry smell in the hallway which is hard on a pregnant woman) until we moved into our new apartment about 6 months into our lease. We were informed we had to move into a 2 bedroom apartment because we had 3 people in the apartment (the newborn counts as one) which we didn't mind that much.

HOWEVER, you would assume that is you are upgrading into a larger apartment that they are forcing you to move into you would get better quality. We had a smaller refrigerator that was missing a shelf and low quality appliances (I mean bent and burned electric burners, rusted over sink, etc.) When we moved in the apartment was so filthy I didn't want to let my newborn lie or bathe anywhere until I cleaned it top to bottom and I was still unable to get all of the stains and rust off. When we left our 1 bedroom apartment we took care to clean it top to bottom so we would get our deposit back, but it seems as though they did not even shampoo the carpets before telling us to move into the 2 bedroom.

We have spent months trying to get things fixed and cleaned and were guareenteed a new fridge when we moved in back in Sept 2006 and our still waiting. Although the staff is friendly they fail to get things done. We requested a notification if another apartment either a 2-bedroom or townhouse opened up and they told us they would...someone even moved in next door and they didn't tell us it was available to be rented.

Laundry Machines: They purchased new laundry machines and increased the amount to do your laundry to $1.75 to wash and $1.50 to dry. They told us they were larger and better quality which is why there was an increase in price. I can't even fit a laundry basket load and they never dry fully. Also, the only way to use the washer/dryers is to put money onto a card in either $20, $30 or $50 which you have to purchase at the leasing office between 9:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday, which I don't know about you, but I am working during the day so I have to leave work early just to put money on the card.

Fitness Center: The pool has been closed off and on the entire year we've been here, winter and summer, so every time I tried to go to the pool there would be a "closed for maintence/construction" sign up. Also, the fitness center is a joke so don't let "luxury amenities" fool you. The gym consists of old equipment of: 1 treadmill, 1 eliptical, 1 rowing machine, some free weights and 4 different lifting machines, all is pretty bad and smelly conditions. It is located in the basement of the leasing builiding which is very sketchy to go into at night by yourself and if you go during the day/early evening there are always kids running around on the equipment.

Security/Parking: Parking is not a problem but you have to be careful because they do tow! The problem is that securtiy is always hard to reach and unavailable most of the time so if your guest arrives after the leasing center closes you have to call the towing company to notify them since the security guard is usually not there and NEVER answers pages or calls. Most of the time I cannot get the cellphone to the tow agency so we have to cross our fingers. It is IMPOSSIBLE for guests and delivery personnel to get into the parkin lot even though you have a call box. The box never works when it rains and will sometimes be open for weeks or won't open for days. We always go and meet delivery people at the road or meet them at the parking lot of the grocery store because the call box never works or we can't buzz them into the building. We have had several guests park their car in other parking lots around the complex because we couldn't get the security man on the phone or the tow company OR even get them into the complex, but homeless people have no problem walking or riding their bike into the complex and hanging out in the buildings or picking through our trash.

Tenants: There is a large mix of tenants from college kids to couples and young families. Don't be surpried if kids stay up until 11pm running in the hallways or ride their bike or if you smell pot. A few times I have felt uncomfortable because I found "tenants" hanging out in the dark corners behind dumpsters once night falls. I attempted to call security but had no luck.

It is convenient to a gas station, food and a grocery store so you can walk there and the public park and water activies are right next door as well.

Overall my boyfriend and I always say we wish we moved when they made us change apartments and we saw the "only apartment available to rent."

Make sure you stay on top of promises they make you because they forget pretty frequently and I've had to have my mother-in-law call several times just to get someone else to bother them.

The updated apartments are beautiful so if you're willing to pay the high cost I would recommend getting one over the standard apartments which use cheap fixtures and crack countertops and appliances but if you're looking for a quiet, convenient, highend and efficient apartment complex, I would keep looking.

Good luck!!
