A great deal if you're not picky

I've lived in this building for 5 years total, first in a studio apartment and now in one of the few "deluxe" one bedrooms which my husband and I moved into when we got married.

Personally, I love this place. I think there are few if any places that have cheaper rents in comparably safe and exciting locations. You really can't beat the rent for this location--it's within easy walking distance of 3 metro lines, shopping at Dupont Circle, the White House, Whole Foods, and even Adams Morgan is only about a mile away--I walk there regularly.

Other pluses: I'm very friendly with most of the building staff who are always helpful, maintenance requests are usually fulfilled within 24 hours, there's a front desk person 24 hours a day and a security guard at night (it's a really safe area to begin with but this is always reassuring). Since I moved in, they even put in a small business center in the lobby which residents can use free of charge.

Negatives: If your noise tolerance is low, this place probably isn't for you. My first apartment was on the outside of the building, and fire engines went by constantly. My new apartment is on the garage side and there are trucks backing up with loud alarms all the time. Thankfully, both my husband and I can sleep through pretty much anything, but if you can't maybe you should choose another place to live (though I would reckon most buildings in the city have their share of noise).

I actually haven't had too many problems with roaches (they spray for them like clockwork 3X a year which strikes me as being very vigilant) though we have seen mice on occasion. The fuses do blow out frequently, but they provide them for free, so this is a minor inconvenience.

Basically, I think this building puts money into the things that really matter: safety and services. I honestly laugh at those who gripe about the hallway carpets. Many buildings in the area charge twice as much. If the choice is crummy hall carpets or drastically increased rent, well I choose the former. Of course, if you are the sort of person who can't stand to live in a less-than-pristine environment, maybe this building is not for you, but I love living here and think it's a great deal for DC!
