unsafe situation

There have been so many false alarms in the middle of the night that tenants now just ignore them and stay in their apartments. This situation is dangerous for the obvious reason that one of these days the alarm could mean there is a real fire. So long as the Fire Department does not have to respond (the building does not call them), there is no cost to AvalonBay Communities, Inc. and therefore no incentive to fix the situation. If the Fire Department had to respond to all of these false alarms, it would impose financial penalties on the owners, which would force them to spend the money to prevent this behavior (e.g., by hiring security guards, posting cameras in the hallways, doing whatever it takes to catch and evict the perpetrators). You want to do something' Call the Fire Department next time you hear the alarm. Call the City Council, call the Fire Chief, call the VP for Property Operations at AvalonBay HQ in Alexandria. Want to have a tenant meeting' Put a flier in everyone's door inviting them to Chef Geoff's one evening.
