It's not as bad as some make it out to be.

I've lived here for three years now. The location for me is quite good because my work is right off the N3 line (which picks up right in front of the building), and a short walk from AU's campus. The latter also ensures a steady supply of idiocy, but it generally changes every semester. I've had annoying neighbors, yes, but since they seem to rotate per semester or year it never lasts too long.

Management is OK once you get to know them. I had a bad experience my first year, but they finally took care of me when the general manager, who was on vacation, came back, and they couldn't do anything without her approval. Generally I find them to be helpful, and some of the maintenance and other building staff are great. They recently renovated part of my apartment out of their generosity without me asking for it--though it was much welcome, of course. For the price I'm paying (probably more expensive now), it's a great deal.

Parking is not too bad if you don't use your car too often. It's hard to find a spot at night, but there is ample street parking a few blocks down. You don't need a car anyway. Between the N line on Massachusetts and the 30 and 90 lines on Wisconsin & Macomb, you can get anywhere in the city quite conveniently. I get the feeling most people who come here and complain are recent suburbanite implants who have yet to realize you don't need and should not use a car in the city except for in a few situations.

Pests: I've seen one roach the whole time I've lived here. Every person I know who has roaches also lives like one. If you're clean, you won't have a problem.

The bottom line: it's pretty good. I've lived in apartments my whole life, and compared to some other places I have minimal trouble here. Every building will have its share of annoying neighbors, and I don't think it's particularly bad here. There are certain things you have to expect in a high-density building. You get used to it.

Liar. You're either (a) management, or (b) a student.

I've lived in other apartment buildings in the same price range in NW DC and the Berkshire does not compare favorably to them. It's much noisier, the maintenance is worse, and the apartments are not as well updated. But the noise and the general "idiocy" from the AU factor are the biggest problems.

This is a joke right? I had roach problems for the first 3 months I lived there! It continued throughout the rest of the year even after my place was sprayed! I'm a very clean person, too! The roaches were crawling up a water pipe from an apartment 3 floors down to live with me! The people in the apartment were slobs and I had to suffer! This apartment complex is an absolute nightmare! You must be Joy Barcia from management or a drunken AU student. I'd hate to be associated with either one which is the reason I'm moving out come August!

I had roaches for months, management was always unresponsive. The washers/dryers in the laundry room are constantly broken, the gym is dirty and outdated, the front desk will misplace your packages and you will receive them several weeks late, their pest control is ineffective. The assistant manager mentioned in the response above is disrespectful and refuses to be helpful to anyone. You must ask her 20 times before she does anything.I do think her goal in life is to do the worst possible job she can on a daily basis. It is amazing to think that she has not been fired. Absolutely everyone who has had to deal with her dislikes her. Gables Residential must keep her there because she is the exact type of assistant manager they want, one who gets nothing done and does not cause them any extra expenses. I have never had to deal with anyone who is so apathetic and disrespectful. Do not give these people your money. This review must have been written by management.

this review is trash. keep your apartment clean and you won't have roaches? what a joke, these things have been swarming my apartment since i first got in, even before i moved any food or significant items in. all i had for the first couple weeks was a suitcase of clothes and a blow-up bed and this room was like a horror movie, with bugs crawling all over the walls. honestly, i hate these "well you get this in every apartment building" kind of reviews. what a couple of pushovers who evidently don't at all care much about quality, even after paying through the nose. get some standards, or at least pretend to have them. otherwise, if i ever build an apartment building, can you move in? it's a dream home for you - limited parking, rude staff, sky high prices, and noisy neighbors but i swear you'll "get used to it." what nonsense.
