If you need to be near campus, it's a good place to live

My boyfriend and I have been living in the Berkshire, or the "berks" as it's called by locals since August of '05
Our rent is quite hefty ($1650/month) for a 1/1 with about 700sqft, but our bedroom is huge and the living room is pretty decently sized also. Admittedly the kitchen and bathroom are teeny-tiny, but the small kitchen is all that gets to me every once in awhile.
Our kitchen floor is peeling up by the Fridge and the counter tops are warped from previous occupants but if you aren't neat freak or someone expecting a beautiful apartment it's not a big deal.
We do have a cat who has tore the screens in the windows slightly which has allowed these flying beetles to come in, we don't have any roaches or any dangerous pest like that, but when the weather changes we do get a beetle or two, but all they do is fly around until the cat kill them, nothing else, no biting or anything like that.
Compared to many other places I've been looking at lately the Berks has a great pet policy, $100 one time pet fee, but I know people who have multiple cats and have never consulted with management (aka paid any money)
Maintenance is almost always very timely and polite.
There are very few *free* parking spots around the building and a lot of people like to park there cars in those for weeks/months at a time, you can pay about $115/month for an indoor reserved spot if it's really a problem for you.
Sometimes on weekends or Wednesdays (American University doesn't have many classes that day) it can get a little loud from kids coming back from parties or having their own parties, but the biggest noise problem we've had was from someone above us who we speculate is a very old person because for a week or so we were listening to him/her watch the nightly news at 5pm. We complained a few times to the front desk, Harold called the person and told them to keep it down, and instructed us to write a letter to management if the problem persisted, it didn't so we didn't.
All in all, a good place to live if you need to be close to AU.
