Even if you are looking for a deal, don't move here

Nothing in this building is worth putting up with, though it may seem like a great deal for someone new to the city. I thought I could put up with the large ------- population in the building, however, they are excessively rude, no one speaks english and the building is probably at twice its legal capacity because of the extra illegal immigrants living in each apartment. All common areas are disgusting, they are cleaned daily with extra strength solvents, but it always smells as though someone has vomited or urinated in them. The laundry facility is repulsive, and conveniently located in the basement next door to the trash room. I have cockroaches, though they aren't TOO bad if you place 20 or so traps around the apartment and keep it clean, but if you walk outside the front flower bed mulch actually appears to be moving it is so infested. I also have had bed bugs in my apartment, which one could liken to fleas, and which I hope to never ever experience again in my life. Management acted fairly quickly, but only with the physical evidence of my bites coupled with a dead bedbug and an article proving that I knew what I was talking about (it wasn't the first outbreak in the building, however). Otherwise, management is slow to respond without constant badgering, though I am not quite sure how much they have the power to do. At least one of the two elevators is always broken, the non- english speaking tenents will shove you out of the way for an elevator, and the stairwell is full of old cigarettes, empty beer cans and grafitti. The music in the apartment next to me is often so loud it rattles my walls. The fire alarm is pulled often on weekends, most often on Sundays, and no one evacuates the building- I have been one of maybe three people that have evacuated for an alarm, which seems rather dangerous to me. The doors are always propped open for all the "extras" who don't have keys, so it doesn't surprise me that the men digging through the dumpsters in the outside alley would come in to keep warm> I have been told by a few people of prostitutes and so forth, however, I have yet to see it myself, so I can't make that claim. The security guard on duty when I first moved here was fairly diligent, but those who have come to replace him do nothing at all, aside from sit at the front desk and watch all the people without keys walk in when someone opens the door. The bottom line- The apartments (at least some) seem nice and have a lot of room and a pretty decent view for those on a budget. However, heed the warnings of those who have taken the time to post on this website, as this is an extremely undesirable place for anyone who doesn't care to live with bugs and illegal aliens. The Mt. Vernon square area is being completely regentrified, but Burke Park is a relic of the days when prostitutes and drug dealers controlled the surrounding areas, and landlords didn't care if they owned slums. This building is also government subsidized, something I should have paid attention to in the beginning. I fully regret moving in, and I highly recommend moving elsewhere.
