I've lived in Calvert House for a year-and-a-half now, and overall I would say it's very good. The management is usually very responsive to issues (i.e., we had a smoker move in below us and the smoke was coming through the ventilators; they had it fixed the next day and we haven't had problems since). The parquet floors were re-laminated when we moved in and have been nice. Yes, the building is a bit older but they are sizeable for D.C. standards. Our kitchen is fine; I don't know why there are complaints about them, other than it's a galley kitchen and quite small.
Parking is not a problem, provided you get a D.C. parking zone sticker ($15 per year). Plenty of parking a block or two away down Calvert by the Embassay's (not worth it to pay for parking, in my opinion). The Metro access is unbeatable and you can walk to Cleveland Park in ten minutes or Adams Morgan/Dupont in 10-15 minutes.
Finally, this place does not have a lot of loud "college types" that was a concern of ours while looking in D.C. We are in our early thirties and wanted a place that wasn't overrun with college kids who stay up till all hours of the night. The building tends to have a lot of older retired women who make for great neighbors in that they aren't loud! Plus, the walls are pretty thick.
One more thing - get a place with a balcony if you can. The views of either Rock Creek Park or Connecticut Ave. are fantastic.
