We moved in to the Capitol Park Plaza (201 I Street, SW) in August 2001. We were really impressed with the relatively low rent and the super accessible location of SW DC (3 nearby metro stops, easy drives to major highways). The Plaza building was a bit outdated, but we were confident that, with the right management, this would be a great place to live. Unfortunately, with the change in ownership in Spring 2003, things have gone from decent to down-right awful. The new management has started disruptive renovations without maintaining basic upkeep of the building. If anything looks nicer now, know that it is only skin deep. A fitness center was completed months ago, but they haven't given any of the residents access yet. The swimming pool was free for residents this summer, but the tiles are chipped and a whole section of the pool was roped off because it was unsafe. In the past few months, we've seen an increase in water leakage, rodents and cockroaches in the building. Security services have been scaled back to daylight hours only, which is scary especially since the building managers are lax when it comes to keeping the gates around the building and to the parking garage closed at night. To fund the renovations, the new management is part of a DC program that sets aside housing for lower income families at reduced rates. Much to our dismay, this has coincided with a noticeable increase in litter and noise in the hallways. All this to say, we are counting the days until we're able to move out of this place.
