Reasons why I moved in and why I'm moving out

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
You can continue to read below (what I wrote in the summer of 2002) but this building has gone section 8 and won't take you if you make too much money. For fear of horrible neighbors and rent going sky-high for the "rich" tenants, I'm moving out. No services here to speak of at all, it's simply a rip off. Our rent has gone up 12.9% and this building is no longer under rent control if you make more than the ceiling. If you call and ask if there are apartments available they won't tell you unless you tell them how much you make a year. Outrageous. It's a sneaky and sly management company that doesn't tell anyone anything. They just go and do it. And I'm leaving. If you're still interested in checking this place out though, read below:
I moved into "the twins" because it had the primary things that I wanted:
1) Proximity to Metro. Take your pick. Federal Center SW is a 8 minute walk, and Waterfront is about 12 minutes. All the buses at L?Enfant Plaza not too far either.
2) Hardwood floors. Personal preference
3) Balcony. Again, personal preference.
4) Safety. Perfectly fine during the day, and passable at night. Keeping in mind that just a few blocks south is less than savory, where I live isn?t that bad.
5) Parking. Forget on-street parking. Simply a crap-shoot and praying helps too. Splurge on the $55/mo. fee for a reserved spot (if there are spaces - comment below.)
The "quirky" parts of living at 101 G St SW:
- Really close to 395. Depending on where you live, noisy traffic and the sirens are really loud.
- Bugs/roaches. Not exactly infested, but like in any apartment, they too are your roommates.
- Maintenance. They have been responsive to me over the last year but I make it a point to be home for maintenance calls.
- Parking. The management rents out spots to commuters from VA and MD. If their alarms go off, then good luck getting someone to realize it (only 8 hours later). The gates break constantly so sometimes you get the people that need to park to look for a freebie.
- Security. Nice people. Sometimes there, sometimes not.
- Air conditioning. WOW. My wife thinks we live in a meat locker. Sometimes I have to agree.
Other comments:
Like someone else wrote, cooking smells come from the neighbors thru the A/C.
Gold?s Gym a 8 minute walk. That?s nice.
Safeway a walkable distance. Library, CVS, etc too.
Very quick to anywhere via 395.
Laundry room is a mess. Linoleum has come up and dead roaches are common to see (at least they?re dead). Machines work but sometimes you get the broken machine with no warning and you already paid! $1.25 for wash, $1.00 for dry.
DSL friendly and if you are on the right side, you can get the dish on your balcony.
Relaxed tenants, lots of internationals. No problems. Some are slobs, but oh well.
I recommend this place because it?s convenient. Location and rent are key.
