Don't Believe the Hype

This building is simply average - it's neither a 1 nor a 5, so take those kind of reviews with a grain of salt. They reflect standards that are way too low (or posted by the management), way too high, or just plain short-sighted.
Is it noisy' Often yes, but it's right on a major street, and all apartment buildings of this size have some neighbor-noise.
Are there funky smells from other units' Yes, and it's the result of some seriously low pressure in the hallways that sucks air in from the apartments. But that means that the smells usually don't make it into your place. You're just as liable to stink things up next time you burn that casserole.
Is it pricey' Perhaps, but not when you consider what they're charging in other nice neighborhoods these days.
The overall building maintenance is sluggish and sometimes inconvenient (lots of basement water leaks), the leasing office is sometimes unresponsive, water pressure seems to have dropped recently, etc.
But the 24-hour desk is convenient, units have individual central heating and cooling controls and garbage disposals, street parking is alright, and the residents are a pleasent mix of students, youngish professionals, and retirees, etc.
So if you're considering moving in, just make sure to tour the place with open eyes first and see if it's worth the downsides. And remember that this is a big, mid-century building and not the Ritz.
