Honest Review-Loved It
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 7/24/2006
Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
I've been here from Aug. 2005 until now, and I am only moving because I wanted to get a one-bedroom and not pay the $12-1300 they were asking for, nor did I want to wait on a waiting list.
Problems:
I've loved living here, aside from getting ants, the frequent water outages (sometimes, for a whole night due to boiler room problems), and the fact that it is not very close to a metro stop. I lived in a small studio facing Tunlaw, and though I had a pretty nice view, the noise was ridiculous at times.
Good points:
I have a car, and it is registered in DC, so parking is not too bad, if you don't mind walking 2 blocks or so, which is not a problem for me. If you do have a car though, and you think in the future, you may be moving to Maryland or Virginia, don't move in DC, because you will have to pay upwards of $200 to register your car the first time, then since you must have a current DC address to remain registered in DC, if you move away, you will have to reregister your vehicle in MD or VA and pay the same amount.
The fitness room is small, and there isn't too much equipment. It is very very hot, but it is adequate if you only need a treadmill/elyptical or minimal weight training equipment. If you go right after normal work hours, it is always packed, and people aren't very considerate of taking 30 minutes or less on the machines.
The laundry room is okay. The only problem I have is that when you are 10 minutes late in checking your dryer, someone dumps your clothing on the shelf. This may be my fault because I should stay down there the entire cycle, but it is very rude, in my opinion.
Maintenance is so-so. Sometimes, I've had to call them 2-3 times, but they do eventually come.
The blinds are bad. I have blinds that I reckon, aren't even manufactured anymore, because they are so old. We were told that we couldn't get them replaced unless they were inoperable... They are an eyesore.
The loading dock is a great help, especially when you need to bring up a basket of groceries. And it is great that there are shopping baskets to help out with heavy loads. But, the loading dock is locked at random times, and there are people parked back there (for more than 20 minutes), in the worst places, so that they block everyone who tries to get in and out.
The building and area are safe. No complaints there. I love the front desk sign -in services (which not many other apartments have). The premises is well kept. It is really nice to go to the tenant appreciation parties also.
I didn't like the fact that there was a 60 day notice to vacate provision in the lease. It is very hard to predict if you are going to move 60-days away, especially if you are apt-hunting in the DC market. I guess it is good for those who are looking to live there, but not good if you are moving out.
The 30-busses pick up almost at the door. But, they are busses, and they move slower than a car would. I leave home about 8:30 a.m. and it takes me 40 minutes to get to 15th and H.
Location to touristy-type stuff and normal stuff is great. It is a 20 minute downhill walk to Georgetown and the Water-front area (in G-Town). There is a Safeway, which is not necessarily walking distance, as you must walk uphill for the 1/2 mile walk back. CVS is a 5-minute walk away, and so is the Post Office, Blockbuster, Whole Foods, and various restaraunts. There is a Washington Sports Club 5 minutes away as well, though I've heard it costs close to $75/mt, and it is ALWAYS crowded and TOO small.
I never hear my neighbors, except when I walk out of the door. Cooking smells are bad only from the hallway. The apartment isn't very well-ventilated, there is only air in the front living area, not the dressing closet or the bathroom. The apartment is very very small, there is kitchenette, which consists of a bar, which is about 2 feet long a refrigerator and a gas stove. There is very very little cabinet space and there is a one foot strip of counter space, enough to put a small microwave. The dressing closet is pretty big, bigger than the kitchenette actually. And, it is well positioned.
Overall, I loved this apartment, and for the price, it is outstanding. It is a little bit small, but the other amenities far outweigh the size and the cons...
