Experiences seem to vary depending on apt building

I like my apartment here and I haven't had many of the problems that I have read from other reviewers. I do think, however, that this depends on which building you are in and what apartment in that building. I am in building 2331 facing away from the street (towards the zoo), and on a higher-level floor. I have friends who live on the same floor, but the other side of the building (facing the street), and they have mice problems. Perhaps they aren't clean (I haven't seen their place), but I know that mantainence hasn't done much to help them either way.

My apartment is a 2BD/1 Bath which is very quiet, has great new carpet and gets a TON of light, which is really important to me. In the two years I have been here, I have only experienced three bugs- two centipedes and a baby spider. I HATE bugs, so this is what I call a good track record. I don't even think about bugs in this apartment. Some highlights of the building: the cleaning staff is awesome and friendly (they make the lobby and hallwalls spotless); mantainence is prompt in my experience, management is generally helpful (you can borrow the vacuum from the leasing office whenever, they will go lock your door if you forgot to and call them, etc.); the carpet is nice; it's quiet here; finally bought brand new washers and dryers; gym in building; walking distance from woodley park metro; barely one block away from the zoo. Also, as a woman, I feel safe in Woodley Park. I've walked to this apartment from the metro as late as 2 am, which may not be the smartest of ideas, but the fact that I even do that is a big deal, considering I'm generally hesitant to walk anywhere in DC that late that isn't DuPont Circle, or some other lively, people-walking-at-night community.

Some downsides are: the paint over the tile in the shower is tacky (had to get used to that); the 1 BD apartments that I have seen have a crappy layout; the lighting (ceiling fans) can be dim, so you have to live in a bright apartment. Also, there is a gym (looks like they are trying to get some new equipment), but it's nothing to write home about, so don't expect much.

Overall, I'm really happy with this building. No real complaints except I wished DC rent wasn't so high in general.
