Please be cautioned, do not move into this building. This apartment is a disgrace and serious health hazard.
1.The fireâ.as mentioned in the previous posts, this was a very scary and disturbing situation. Though they claim it isnât their fault, as far as I know, a leaky pipe or overflowing toilet should not cause a major electrical fire. Additionally, it was very disturbing to find out that require safety features were not up to code and not working (such as the fire alarm system). It was almost literally impossible to get a hold of any company representative, calls were not returned and residents were ignored. To find out any information, residents literally had to go to the apartment and look for signs posted on the door, even though we had provided our phone numbers and email addresses 2 times and were promised that we would be provided with updates. Very little time (2-3 hours) was offered to retrieve our possessions and it was in the middle of the day during the work week. I literally had to leave in the middle of the work day and come back with everything I could carry that I might need for a month. Cafritz was very hesitant to compensate residents at all and only did so after residents began to organize and consider legal action.
2. Leaky roofsâ..please be forewarned that the roof constantly leaks. Significant chunks of the ceiling in my 8th floor apartment have fallen in and it took over 2 weeks to have repairs made. For those two weeks I had rain literally falling in my apartment and was exposed to the mold and insulation in the open space. Apparently, this has happened before and was not disclosed to me upon moving in. The repair man actually told that he had been to this apartment before. I know it has occured in other 8th floor apartments as well. Now, a few months after these repairs, the ceiling is again falling in. I was told that the roof had been fixed, but obviously, all they did was cosmetically patch up the ceiling.
3. AC and hot waterâ..the heat in the summer is stifling and air barely works. We were told that is was because people had their windows open, but looking up at the building, all windows were closed! I literally had to go out and invest in some powerful fans to make it through the summer and even then it was still ridiculously hot. In the winter, the water in my apartment is often luke warmâ.I have taken many more cold showers than I would have liked.
4. Laundry roomâ..after the fire, the laundry room was out of commission for quite some time. More recently, water had been flowing out of pipes onto the floor. It eventually recedes, only to happen again. It is quite unpleasant to do laundry in an inch or so of water. Additionally, the vending machine selling the cards required to do laundry was out of cards for quite some time, so if you had not previously purchased a card, you could not do laundry.
To be fair, there are a few positives. Cosmetically the apartments are nice, with great wood floors. The apartment is quiet and is in a great location if you are a GW student or work downtown. Additionally, the rent is reasonable for the area, though they recently raised it, even after the fire! Also the deposit is rather small, but it is unrefundable. I know they say that you get what you pay for, but for my money I expect a lot more. qmzu4EHcaGAPVCPw2Fai
