Are you Kidding Me'

It amazes me that people can write such negative reviews about this apartment, which in my opinion has more class and character than any other residential building I have seen in DC. I have lived in multiple places in DC, and this is by far a) my favorite on all sorts of levels, and b) the best deal I've ever seen for the money, especially if you're a pet-owner (I pay $1575 for a HUGE one-bedroom apt). I'm not alone in this opinion -- all of my neighbors whom I've talked to all agree that they love living here.

Yes, the building was built in the 1920s, but personally I love the character and class that comes with this distinction. From the beautiful stonework on the outside, to the old paneling around the windows, to the funky colors on the hallway floors, this place is unique and charming. Honestly, they don't make buildings like this anymore. The apartments are huge -- even the one bedrooms come with extra mini-offices -- and have high ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors.

Management is also wonderful. There is someone working at the door 24 hours a day, and the maintenance staff are super friendly and respond to requests within one day.

Another big plus for us is that they're one of the only places that allows dogs and cats and doesn't charge you ludicrous fees for the privilege.

Seriously, I would recommend this place to anyone, and everyone who comes to visit me comments on how great our apartment is. But don't take my word for it: draw your own conclusions from the fact that there's usually a long wait list to get in.

One warning, though -- if you're the kind of person who insists on having central a/c and/or the most modern appliances, then this place probably won't be for you. There are laundry machines in the basement, but I've never had problems getting one. (I will confess that I sometimes miss having a dishwasher, though.)

Also, the parking situation is a little challenging, but you really don't need a car if you live here -- it's walking distance to Columbia Heights metro, but who needs the metro when you have the 42 bus, which runs from here to Dupont like every 3 minutes, and the S buses, which are also super reliable and go south into the city'
