Happy, but not Satisfied

I moved into Mass Court in January of 05, and it's been a fairly good experience. I chose this place because I was moving to DC from out of state and had to pick a place from the Internet. If I was looking again I would say the following:
1) the neighborhood is barren, not neccesarily dangerous, but barren. We are hidden over by the court complex and there is nothing nearby. It's a five block walk to shops and restaurants and a train ride to anything good. If you want to be able to walk outside and go to S-bucks or to the grocer this place is not for you.
2) The lease I signed is as Iron clad as they get. My parents are both lawyers and I am a law student and this lease is rock solid. If you want flexibility or responsibility from your apt. complex this place is not for you.
3) The sirens are unreal. The building is near a police station and the onramp to the freeway so the ambulances, firetrucks and cop sirens get REALLY LOUD at all hours of the day and night.
4) Parking is unbelivably expensive because it is operated by PMI who would like nothing more than to lend out all spaces to people who frequent the MCI Center 3 blocks away. 150 a month for a space' OMG!
5) The construction is a little shoddy. The dry wall seams in my apartment are crooked and pockmarked, all of which is visible thru paint. The closet doors stick and jam. The handles fall off the cabinets. Unless you run heat/AC all the time there is inadequate ventilation thru the windows or via the fans.
6) No worthwhile Amenities or services are provided. Cable, phone, electric, water, heat are all on your own. The workout room is small for a community of this size and always jam packed. The new concierges are good but for awhile there was this man who was just a jerk.
7) a cop car crashed into one of the neighboring bldg's last month and they have been tearing down those bldgs ever since. It is dirty, dusty and loud now because of it. The Mgmt also isn't very good about keeping dog poo off the sidewalk and walking track on the roof, or even occassionally out of the elevators.
Other than that, the bldg is almost always clean. The biz center is nice if you don't have a computer of your own. The bldg, isn't fully populated so it's fairly quiet. But for 1600 a month I expected more and am planning to move somewhere else as soon as my lease is up to be closer to the action of DC.

Whose responsibilty is it to take care of their dog/cat's poop? I thought the owners'. I am not a pet person and can not understand that the pet rent in the building is only $25 a month when pet's owners' treat the building like it is a poop yard for dogs?? Should charge much more than that! |

I think this review is fairly balanced. I moved in in December of 2004, and will be moving out when my lease is up. I'm a professional person, so I realize I'm a bit older than a lot of other people here. Unfortunately when people ride up in elevators with open alcohol and/or in their pajamas, I feel pretty safe in saying it's like living in a dorm here. While a lot of folks are friendly and responsible, you have the idiots who push each other into the pool fully clothed and scream at the top of their lungs, "Dude! You owe me a f***ing phone!!" This happened earlier this summer and went on until 2:30 in the morning. As my apartment (and many others) look out over the pool, I was happy to see some restrictions (though possibly not all...) put on the deck. As with many things, it's always a few people who ruin it for everyone (whether it's pool parties or dog poo). I've found the office people to be very helpful and responsive. The concierges are almost always nice, but often not all that helpful. Case in point: one Saturday night the rooftop music on the deck was still playing when I went to bed at 2:00 am. The next night I came down to the front desk at 10:00 to inquire as to whether it might be possible to turn the piped in 'hits of the 50's' off at a reasonable hour (it was still playing at that hour on Sunday night too, and the pool was already closed). I was told that the music was turned off at 9:00. I said it hadn't been turned off the night before, nor was it turned off that night. The concierge's response was, "Well, no one had gone upstairs yet." How is that a good answer? If you're going to have a policy, you may want to actually follow through on it. The construction is most definitely cheap. When I moved in there were spots on my carpet (even though my unit supposedly had never been lived in). I've also noticed that they're using damaged higher-end appliances in the kitchen (stove with a groove carved into the burner at such an angle it's hard to see unless you're looking for it and a fridge with a tear in the cushion that helps seal the door.) All in all, the place looks great. It's clean. The lack of working elevators has been ridiculous and losing our air conditioning on one of the first hot days of the summer wasn't pleasant (though management did what they could to keep everyone sane). I've been relatively happy here. But it's not worth the money. Not at all. |
