A very qualified recommendation

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
I lived there a little over a year, was one of the early tenants. It was very nice to move into a new building, but the novelty wore off soon.
1. They did a decent job of fixing stuff inside the apartment, but with a new apartment, you wouldn't expect anything to go wrong like the washing machine. But it did break, and they somehow blamed it on us, instead of just a defective machine. BTW, it took them over two weeks to fix it. They don't believe in spare parts there.
2. The computer room is cool, it is nice having 6 computers in a room for access. The only exception to that is all the students who use the computers seem to figure out ways to break them. Over the past several months I never saw more than 2 fully functional at a time.
3. I was actually downstairs last winter when the police car ran through the brick wall of the apartment. I really don't understand why they haven't started fixing a hole in brick wall after 8 months. It didn't affect me actually, but just the thought of it taking so long and I actually did know the guy in that apartment. He of course was not very happy.
4. It was very nice having a Party room with a big flat screen. They say you can use it in the daytime without cost, but that is a big lie, one day I tried to use at noon with a few of my friends, but the maintenance supervisor came in and chewed us out for being there without a reservation. I did use it at night a few times though, but it cost me $150/use plus $500 deposit. It would have been nice if any one at the front desk actually knew how to turn on the home theatre system there too.
5. The pool, hot tub and BBQ is cool too, and I used it a couple of times. The problem is the inconsiderate law students (mostly GT) but there are other students there too. On the 4th of July, one small group monopolized the underpowered grills for over 6 hours. Then they got drunk and left beer cans in the pool. I would like to say that this is Atypical, but it wasn't. Someone was always hogging the two grills, cooking long drawn out meals, like no one else wanted to cook.
6. Fees, of course they let you have a pass when you move in, but don't start to renew your lease. They will increase the fees by more than 50% and tack on a few more that don't make any sense. This is the reason that I actually left, not for all the other reasons listed above. Oh, they also threatened to sue me, because I wouldn't pay a year of their fees, for time that I wasn’t going to live there. I paid them the pro-rated amount for my time there and they were pissed.
7. Deposit - They certainly got me here for not agreeing to pay their extra fees. My apartment was clean, very clean, I even got a professional steamer to clean the carpet. They said the carpet wasn't clean enough for me to get the entire deposit back and they charged me for a full cleaning. They will charge you too, so just expect it.
Even, with all those complaints, I loved the location, even though being down the block from 3 homeless shelters, transgendered prostitutes made it a bit uncomfortable at times, but I was never really threatened even though I they did ask me for money all the time.
And again, it was nice to move into a brand new apartment, but again, it won't be new for you. Maybe they will have fixed the freight elevator by that time (6 months down) and when you move in, the whole building won't have to share just one elevator.
