So I previously posted a review expressing my fear of moving into this area & building, after reading the negative reviews up here. I could not have been more wrong about this place! We have been here 2 months and we LOVE it!!
We have had absolutely NO problems at all since we've moved in. We've had no safety issues on the street at all, ever. No one even makes comments when you're walking down the street, and when walking by myself late at night, I've never been overly concerned (i.e. no moreso than I would be walking anywhere by myself late at night). There are generally so many people on the streets because of all the restaurants and the new huge movie theatre that opened on 7th Street. It is SO nice being able to walk everywhere you want to go and being so close to the Metro! Also, it's so awesome having that convenience store downstairs--I frequently run down there to buy the essentials so I can hold off driving to the grocery store.
There will be even more people in our area once the condos next to us and the apartment building and hotel across the street open. I don't know what the bitter, sad little person who wrote about gunshots was talking about--we've NEVER heard gunshots here or seen any weapons! There are sirens, but we heard sirens sometimes when we lived in Woodley Park too-they are not overwhelmingly frequent.
The management has been great-we've had a few maintenance issues (nothing serious-the shower head being too tight to adjust, a loose outlet) and they've been up to our apartment in 1-2 hours each time. We've found the doormen to be very nice and polite, always offering to hail cabs for us when we had guests, etc. The parking is tight, but that seems par for the course for any garage in the area.
And yeah, it's a little pricey, but we were paying nearly double in our old place, and we think the price is really worth the convenience of being able to walk or Metro to so many places--we're saving the stress of having to drive in the District!
Any way, I'd highly recommend this complex to anyone!

No problems walking late at night? I tried to go 1 1/2 blocks to the liquor store and was asked for money by 2 homeless people and approached by a "he-she" prostitute. This was at 7:00 pm! I am a large individual and will not walk outside of the building after dark. It is not safe!

My old place was the Gables at Woodley Park-paid a ton. Were you walking to the liquor store at 5th & K? I wouldn't go there either. There's always guys outside the store at 6th & H but again, I've never had a problem. I'm aware there are always at least 2-3 people hanging out there and if it's ever late and I'm walking by myself, I just walk on the other side of the street. It's downtown and it's changing over, but ask your friends who live in Shaw or LeDroit Park or even Columbia Heights--we are in a much better area. ut I've never had a problem, and I'm 5'3". |
