I lived in the New Amsterdam for two years. I paid $1300 for a two bedroom apartment, which is a better deal than I found anywhere else in NW. The location is awesome, four blocks from the metro and the new Target. 14th st can be a little noisy on the weekends, it's a major artery. If you want to sleep with your windows open don't live here.

I never felt that the neighborhood was unsafe. I walked down 14th st after dark every day and it is well lit, always has people around and a visible police presence.

I felt the staff was slightly below average. They will deal with the big stuff and keep the building functioning. Don't expect them to go above and beyond for anything, but if you push them to fulfill their obligations they will.

The outdoor parking space was secure and cheap, only $60 a month extra. We waited about 3 months on a waiting list before being able to get into the parking lot, and getting in was nice because street parking can be very frustrating, especially on the weekends. There were times when we had to park 2-3 blocks away.

I felt the building was quiet, people generally keep to themselves. The lobby is recently redecorated, but the upper floors haven't gotten there yet. They are clean, but outdated and a little depressing.

Over all, my attitude was that you get what you pay for. We got a great deal on an apartment that was clean, safe and quiet. If you want great service and top of the line aesthetics, look elsewhere, but we were basically satisfied with our experience.
