Great value for social types

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
Let me start with the good things:
1. The roof is phenomenal. 360 degree view of the city, 3 new top quality gas grills, a pool, and good quality furniture. You can meet so many people cooking dinner, chilling over drinks, or lounging by the pool. 4th of july is killer up there.
2. The staff. By far, the friendliest staff I have ever seen at an apartment. It's pretty common to see residents chatting with the staff, and they are always responsive and helpful. The socials that they throw (every 2-3 months) can be pretty fun.
3. Other perks. The gym is pretty good. Almost never a line for equipment, 4 tvs, and a lot of room. 24 hr coffee / tea, and Mon-Fri carb (muffins, bagels, donuts, fruit) breakfasts are okay. The lounge is cool, but there is never anyone but grad students using it to study.
4. The apartments. They are pretty good, but not great. They are spacious with some nice styling, but the appliances are average. The cabinets are kinda cheap. But the apartments are all pre-wired for ethernet and surround sound. And you cannot hear your neighbors at all.
5. Location - There is a fine line in DC between trendy and crappy. Post is just on the right side of that line. Close to metros, close to U St and Adams Morgan and Dupont, and close to a lot of bars and restaurants and shopping. I think it's the best location in the city.
The not-so good (I don't think anything at this building qualifies as bad):
1. The price. I think the default rent increase in my 2 years has been 10-15%, despite a bad economy. If you're planning on staying for more than a few years, plan accordingly. Also, a $300/person amenity fee is a real b*tch.
2. The roof. Like others have noted, the roof gets crazy in the summer with friends and kids. I've been guilty of it, but when it's not your friends, it gets old fast.
3. Some of the apartments have horrible positioning. You can pay $2-3K/month to live on the 1st floor with a view of someone else's window. Mass Ave is unbelievably loud on the lower levels. I have also heard about mice on the lower levels...
4. I would say 75% of the residents are nice, from grad students to congressmen. But, as with any "luxury" place, you get your share of primadonnas and trust fund babies. That said, it's a relatively friendly place.
In summary, if you have the cash to spare and like to be on the go and social, this is a great place. If you tend to go back to your apartment and chill, you may find better value elsewhere.
