Not bad at all

I am currently a resident of Shiply Park Apts. I have been living there for a year now and I no complaints whatsoever. I am renting a 2 bedroom apt. on the Southern ave. side of the property. I usually park on the street but we have a lot that has adequate parking. I moved here from down south & I head all types of things about notorious "SE" so I began looking for apts. in what is denoted as "better" neighborhoods. Yes, they may be better but I am not so nieve as to think that crime only happens certain places. After looking at many in "NW" I found that you were not getting your moneys worth! I am not paying no 1500.00 for apt with radiator heating, window AC, old window, old tin blinds, old hardwood floors they try to sell you on as "antique" and the largest rats I have ever seen were in NW! With that being said I revamped my apt hunting experience. I located shipley park and at the type they were going through renovation. New stove with microwave ranges, parkay hardwood, new bathrooms (with powerflush, waterless toilets) intercom system so you would not have to have a home phone to let your guest in. They were spacious. The ground were (are) well maintained an manicure. My building is VERY clean (that is not all maintanence fault. THE RESIDENTS OF A BUILDING HAVE A RESPONSIBITY TO MAINTAIN THE PROPERTY AS WELL AS YOUR GUEST! You cannot have guest coming to your community throwing beer cans in your yard, paper, wrappers, smoking out in the front, throwing cigs...etc. Most people let their guest do it because THEY DO IT WHERE THEY LIVE! Hello!!! A hood is only a hood because of the residents! A city doesn't make a particular place a hood. If SE is hood it is because those that live there have no responsibility as it relates to their community. The rental staff are EXCEPTIONAL! EVERY PROBLEM I HAVE HAD THEY ATTEND TO IT IMMEDIATELY! THAT GOES FOR MAINTAINENCE AS WELL. I had a problem with a stopped up toilet backing up in my tub the first weekend I was there. Maintainence came and repair it 11pm on a sat. night and I was not home. He went in and did it after calling and seeing if I was not home. Most would not like that. I DID! DONT WAIT TILL I GET HOME BECAUSE I DONT HAVE TIME TO WAIT ON YOU...YOU GOT KEYS...GO IN AND FIX IT! I dont have problems out of the rental office because they dont have any out of me! I pay my rent on time!!! I have never seen a mouse, any rats (they maintain the trash even on weekends)nor have I seen any roaches (and they do routine exterminations.) Their was an incident where there was an incident where there was an assault in the parking lot. I dont know specifics but there was a gun shot and police were then out there with yellow tape. No one was killed. I checked with the police department a couple of days after and it was not a random act of violence per se (like someone was going to their car and just assaulted someone) it was an incident of something reoccuring with some guys...retaliation of some sort. Personally this is what occurs because of the residents of an area as opposed to something the rental office has anything to do with. Too, this could occur ANYWHERE in the city. I simply wantes somewhere to live that was reasonably priced so as to not interfer with me saving to purchase a home and allows me to attend school (as it relates to finances) without having a roomate (I am an adult...I am not interested in living nowhere I have to have a roomate to afford) and I felt safe and I do. I have not problems leaving my home at any time. The same precaution I exercise here are the same I would if I lived in Georgetown. We have access to a very nice splash park (geared more so for the kids to enjoy so my 2 brothers that live with me enjoy it) Another things is that I chose the side of the community I wanted to live on. I assumed there would be less activity, if there was going to be any, on the side that was directly on souther ave. Thusfar, that has been the case. No problems. The person before mentioned the locks on the door. THE RESIDENTS mess up the doors trying to leave it unlocked or they put something in the lock to let their guest/boyfriends/girlfriends in! Anytime the lock is messed up in our building it is generally immediately repaired. I am not planning to rent forever so there are things I can tolerate as a means to getting where I need to be sooner and they all that. With rent ranging from 825-850 for a 2 bedroom (that everyone comments on being so nice when visiting) I will be purchasing soon as opposed to renting the place I was looking at up NW (Mt Vernon Plaza) and not being able to save as much because rent was higher and rats are plentiful. I can afford to live pretty much where I would like but I chose a place that was a decent community that afforded me the opportunity to reach my goals in a timely manner. Thanks.
