I have to wonder where these people were living who reviewed the Chastleton so poorly. I've been here for a year and had a great experience.

The staff: Specifically Brenda Smart in resident relations, all the security guards - David esp., but all others too are great. Anything I complained was broken was fixed that day.

Yes, the management was a bit relaxed when I first came to rent an apartment. this was a good thing! as a freelancer, it was tough to supply paystubs that a lot of apartment buildings required. I didn't have standard paychecks. The Chastleton trusted me to pay my rent and had reasonable move in costs. They have been equally gracious as I consider moving now.

Note: I'm considering moving only because I would like a bigger apartment and am not sure I'm going to find that in the price range I'm looking for in Dupont so am considering moving out a little further and to a place that's right on top of the metro. But the chastleton at under $1,000 for studios and under $1,500 for one bedrooms is as close as I've found in this neighborhood for all the amenities the building has, and I'm actually considering staying because i like the people, neighborhood and living here so much.
amenenties include:
*fitness center, (small but fine for me, couple of treadmills, bike and nautilus equip. and we're two blocks from the dc jcc with a full gym and pool)
*24-hour security. and i haven't met one guard who isn't friendly, professional, upbeat, kind to talk to, alert and hard-working.
*package room (they sell snacks, have dry cleaning drop off) and mary is cheerful, sweet and knows everyone!
*party room. for $75 and a deposit (which you get back) you can rent this beautiful 1920s ballroom (my grandma used to go to parties here!) there's a full piano, tables ad chairs, mini kitchen. by the way you can sit here any time the room isn't rented and the chastleton recently hosted a superbowl party and holiday party. i had a fundraising party for a charity walk and raised thousands.
*little courtyard/garden. i never sat here but you could!

Other praise: it's a 10 min. walk to the metro, or adams morgan. you can walk to the mall in a half hour. the S2/S4 buses stop in front of the door

i never have seen a bug.the place is very clean and someone is cleaning something everyday. they recently brought in a new manager - David Parnam --who immediately did a full extermination -- i assume in response to complaints like the ones posted here. They also installed new carpet, fixed the elevators and seem to be making some other modifications.

Negatives: Sorry, i really don't have too many. yes, the building is old... and some things (the elevators) show it. It's expensive -- it's dupont circle! greatest neighborhood in the city. the apts. are small - my studio was 400 sq. ft. with a half-fridge and 3/4 stove. but i had a walk in closet. and i don't feel those things are the chastleton's fault or any different than elsewhere.

Oh here's one tip: the building is old and the doorways are small! I had to sell a couch I loved on the day i moved because it would not fit in my apt! similarly my bathroom door is awkward and opens oddly.

enjoy! Jennie (dcedit@hotmail.com)
