I am a medical student who previously went to Gtown undergrad. My boyfriend and I live in a townhouse and have just renewed our lease with McLean Gardens. When we first decided to move here, I saw a bunch of negative ratings about VMG on this website and was tempted to just look somewhere else -- but I'm really glad I didn't.

I lived in a literal slum in Georgetown for 2 years as an undergrad for more money than I am paying now at VMG. The people who are making comments about VMG being more costly than it's worth have obviously never rented anywhere else in DC. Every friend I have from Gtown who is still living in DC has come to visit my apt, and they all are impressed with the services and quality of living we receive for the price we pay.

VMG is a very attrative community from the outside. I used to run by here when I was an undergrad and was always impressed by the landscaping. I have to say that at least one a week they have a crew out here mowing the grass and triming shrubs, etc. In addition, the parking lot, which is NEVER full, is very cheap by DC standards. No one can believe that I pay less than $100/mo for parking. You also shouldn't overlook the pool. It can get slightly crowded on weekends, but it's still better than no pool at all. Plus, they are fairly lenient about allowing friends/visitors at the pool.

McLean Gardens is not only attractive from the outside, but the interior of the buildings (at least the townhouses) have been well-maintained. I do not live in a renovated apt, but when we moved in here over a year ago, you could not tell that anyone ever lived here before. The appliances aren't brand-new, but they are clean and in fine working order.

When it comes to maintenance, I have never seen a place as efficient as VMG. I have called them 3 times for maintenance in the past year, and all requests have been fulfilled by the end of the day. One time I simply asked them to replace the bulb in the kitchen light, and they were over in the hour. Another time, our dryer (yes, each unit has a washer and dryer!!!) stopped working, and they brought us over a new one that very afternoon. I honestly don't know of any other community/building that is so prompt. Lastly, being a medical student, I have my share of studying to do. I can honestly say that VMG is a perfect place if you like it quiet. I know that we have a lot of college students living in the complex. However, I have heard my neighbors all of 2 times in the entire year we've lived here.

Overall, I have to say I have seen the horrors of renting in DC. Places without working smoke detectors, without front door locks, without air-conditioning, without washer/dryers, without working refrigerators -- and landlords who refuse to fix them -- FOR THE SAME PRICE AS VMG. I have no idea where the people who complain about this place came from (maybe backwoods WVa where rent is $50/mo). However, VMG is a very well-run community, and we really love it here. We will definitely be staying a long time.
