Living here has made me absolutely miserable. The building is in shoddy shape and the maintenance crew and staff are in no hurry to change that. Seduced by an offer for a free month's rent and an affordable cost, I moved in in August of 2007 when they were "just about" to start putting in new windows and reseal my disgusting tub; it is now January 2009, and despite multiple requests from me, my windows and tub are the exact same. It also took them a month to repair a growing number of cracks in the ceiling, outlining the toilet above mine, which was ominously threatening to come crashing through. After a series of calls and formal letters, I finally got them to fix it by reminding them that they did not inform me of a long-standing roach problem before I signed my lease, and threatening to move out. The elevator also has random days where its alarm just starts ringing constantly, often in the middle of the night, for upwards of 45 minutes at a time. There is also regularly at least one of three elevators that is completely out of order, resulting in a whole crowd of people (there are 1100 apartments, so...) clamoring to cram into the one that works when it finally arrives. In addition to a disgusting roach problem that will most likely never go away, other residents have bed bugs, which I have so far been lucky enough to not have (knock on wood!). By the way, when I first went to the front desk after moving in to complain about the roach problem, I was completely lied to and told that it was because the tenant who occupied this space before me "wasn't very clean" and was led to believe that the problem was confined to my unit, which was obviously a crock.
It's a nice location, not far from Columbia Heights metro and right on a great bus route (S1/2/4), but that's hardly enough of a reason to you to subject yourself to living in filth with incompetent people to field your concerns. So, unless you enjoy infestations, disorder, and being lied to when you're not being ignored altogether, don't make my mistake: DON'T LIVE HERE!

Your description was hilarious and tragically accurate. These roaches have quite the will to live. I've spent a small fortune on those roach bait things that the mama roach takes back to her heathen bunker, and it works for about a week, but then they come back with a vengeance... they're mutant roaches with body armor. *shudder*

I agree fully with you. I keep my unit as clean as I can. However, the roaches are out of this world. These roaches are not your grandfathers roaches - these motha!@#$ers are athletic. You try to hit them and dash off. You run water to drown them, they swim viciously for safety. Only thing missing is the cycling event. I disagree with the staff not being attentive though. Them roaches are terrible, I kill at least 5 a day.
