Twin Oaks: A Reasonably Priced Gem

In the last 3-5 years, Columbia Heights has become the place to live; historically an extrememly diverse neighborhood, bordered by Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, and the sourthern most part of Georgia Ave Petworth, this area has seen both renaissance and displacement in the last few years. We all read the City Paper, right' Twin Oaks stands out because its a building that seems to be maintaining an affordable diverse, mutli-income, well-run apartment complex.
Given what prices are usually in this area of the city, Twin Oaks is priced just right. The Management Team is, IMO, helpful and friendly. So its more than a good deal for what you get: hardwood floors, in some units higher ceilings (not in mine, but some of my neighbors!), laundry facilities on site, some units with really great views, Mom&Pop stores, Giant close by, and Metro accessibility with both buses and rail nearby (the 52 and 54 stop right in front of the building and green line metro is about 7 blocks away).
It's clear that there has been an effort to keep improving Twin Oaks - with small improvements and niceties (painting the hallways, security on the grounds on evenings). In truth there are some pest control issues - but management has regular opportunities to have pest control come and they're really responsive. It's also not unusual - the apartment building is close to Rock Creek Park so its not unheard of...the management is good about response and they seem to go away (silverfish, ladybugys, an occasional roach) once you have the apartment sprayed.
Overall, I think Twin Oaks is a gem - it's affordable, in a diverse community, Metro accessible, you can walk to the grocery store, laundry is on site. Plus its less than a block from hipster bar The Red Derby. Great deal, nice community.

Are you in the east building (older) or west (newer)? I moved into the West building about a month ago and despite spraying and keeping NO food in the apartment except in the fridge, I still see roaches. Fewer in my apartment now but in the hallway every single day. I'm considering asking to move to the other building if it's any better over there.
