Great place to live in Washington DC

This is my second year at Van Ness South. After my first year, I moved to Tysons Corner to save on rent. Boy, did I make a huge mistake. Anyway I am glad to be back.

The first thing you will notice about the apartments at Van Ness South is that they are spacious. My 1 Bedroom is 950 sq. ft. and my wife and toddler and I have been living here comfortably. You won?t find a 1 Bedroom in DC thats so huge -- Trust me, I looked at all the 1 Bedrooms that were advertised as *huge* and couldn?t find one over 750 sq. ft. Van Ness South and Albemarle are the only 2 buldings on Connecticut Avenue with this kind of space (Both belong to the same management, but Van Ness South has more residents and better facilities). By the way, for all you sound-sensitive people out there, the walls are solid concrete and I have never been able to hear my neighbours.

The facilities at Van Ness South are totally awesome. There is aerobics twice a week, it has its own library and there is a gym as well. There is an ATM right in the building and you can go to the nearby grocery store (Giant) from the underground parking (Great when it snows or rains). The Van Ness Metro is right next door too.

Most of the people living here are super rich, even though the rents wouldn?t show it. Most of these people are retired, having given their own houses and condos on lease, and have been here for 10-15 years. There are lots of diplomats too who work at consulates nearly (Switzerland, Netherlands, Israel, Bahrain, etc.) and then there are those who work for the World Bank or IMF. The neighbours are friendly and my 2 year old goes to a twice-a-week meet organized by a resident. The culture is totally cosmopolitan -- As an expat, I feel very comfortable here.

The rents are on the slightly higher side and wouldn?t compare to Virginia or Maryland. But you get what you pay for. For my wife, just the fact that she can take the metro and go anywhere, without the hassle of driving, means a lot. Rents have gone down quite a bit since I moved and you should be able to get a good deal.

The management has changed recently because the building?s holding company changed hands. They got rid of a lot of the old people (Kim was good -- I agree with the previous poster, but Arthur was nasty at times). The new management has begun to show that they care and it is a matter of time before we get used to them.

All in all, Van Ness South is a great place to live and one I strongly urge you to consider if you plan to live in Washington DC. After you come here, you will realize why it is one of Washington DC?s best addresses to live.
