OK, but not great

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
I lived there for a year and recently moved, right after the rennovations finished. The rennovations were great for the lobby, but didn't do anything for the rest of the building. You pay a lot for "luxury" when the rooms are no better than those in non-luxury apartments (although they are clean, you shouldn't need to pay luxury prices for a clean apartment). Basically, you pay extra for a nice lobby, a doorman who's usually asleep, and a management staff that is often helpful, but not always. I point all this out because I just moved to an apartment that is not advertised as "luxury," and the service is the same, the room is nicer, and the only difference is the lobby.
Negatives
- Owned by Charles E Smith Residential, Big Business menality sometimes; they don't like to make exceptions to policy, even if they make sense.
- Lots of mandatory hidden fees (move-in fee, amenities fee, mandatory $9/month desk phone fee) They add up.
- At times, you will feel like you live in a senior citizens home.
- Van Ness is not exactly a lively area. Kind of a pain to get to N. Virginia or much of downtown.
- Parking is $150/month.
Positives
- Clean, spacious rooms.
- Well run, for the most part.
- Close to metro (so you can leave Van Ness...)
- Close to supermarket/CVS/bank
- Really nice lobby.
