Most things good-except the management.

I have lived in this building for 1 1/2 years, and mostly it is very good. I will say that the longer I live here, the lower my opinion of management becomes. I'll get more to that at the end of my review.

1) Location: A. Not the coolest neighborhood, but convenient to everything, and (relatively) safe.

2) Space: A. I live in a big 2 BR/2 BA with 7 closets! Heaven! Very nice space arrangement. (Of course, we pay VERY high rent for it.)

3) Kitchen: B. New white appliances, but cheap melamine cabinets that were clearly haphazardly installed. Enough cabinet space unless you shop at Costco a lot. Very nice stone tile floor. And enough room for a 6-person table, so that's good.

4) Bathrooms: B. Could be updated, but lots of vanity space.

5) Floors: B . The person before us had installed wall-to-wall carpet, and when that was ripped out to redo the floors, lots of staples were left all over the apartment, which we took out with pliers. Otherwise, nice.

6) Paint: D. Very poor paint job. Any adhesive left on the walls by the previous tenant was painted right over. Lots of drips in the bathrooms, on doors, etc. Very sloppy job, but also very typical of apartments.

7) Heating/AC: B . Haven't had many problems, but some rooms have new thermostats and old vents, or old thermostats and new vents, not consistently updated.

8) Laundry: B. It's very convenient to have a small laundry room on every floor, but it is expensive, and there is often at least 1 broken machine.

9) Parking: Expensive! If you drive to work, I wouldn't try to park on the street-hardly any street parking around here. But the parking garage is expensive.

10) Storage rooms: D. Old, dank, filthy, and just plain scary!

11) Gym: C. Small but convenient. Okay if you don't need it during prime hours.

12) Noise: Depends on which apt. you're in. Some street noise is inevitable. We've had some noise from other apartments, but not too bad.

13)Management: D . If you don't already know, Archstone-Smith has a pretty bad reputation in this city, and I say they deserve it. For many years, they were charging illegal rent increases to older residents. The tenants association is now suing management. Also, very high turnover of office staff here. For a week this winter, they were having problems with the boiler or something and the early risers like me had to take cold showers. Not only did it take them a week to fix, but they never posted anything or slipped notices under our doors. No communication! And yes, after the fatal fire in January, their first notice was about renter's insurance, not building safety or anything truly important. How many service calls did it take to fix the icky flourescent light in our kitchen' 4. The shabby front elevators have broken tiles and missing railings and have been that way since before I moved in, but since they are on the "capital improvements" list, who knows when they'll be repaired. Have heard complaints from others regarding mice, roaches, etc. that the building doesn't address, but haven't had any problems ourselves. Overall, I'd say the management here is really sub-par.
