Good Location with Major Trade Offs

Years at this apartment: 2008-01-01 - 2009-01-01

Bottom Line: Could recommend this place with reservations: Good location & decent price for the area, but NOISY, older cabinets and appliances, and few "perks" with living here.

But you do get free cookies every morning.

Really, it's just a basic place to live.

Details:

I've lived at The West Park Apartments for about a year.

Although it's not the newest building in the area, I chose it because I liked the hardwood floors, the amount of sunlight, great location in west Dupont, and controllable heat/AC.

The rental price included all utilities except cable/internet and there was no monthly "pet rent" for my cats.

Problems:

NOISE! Because of its proximity to 2 clubs and 1 nursing home, there are trash trucks and delivery vehicles EVERY MORNING! Do not underestimate how much noise will reach your apartment; living here, you risk waking up each morning to the sound of hundreds of beer bottles shattering into the refuse truck or the "beeping" of another delivery vehicle backing up.

You also hear a lot of sirens.

Yes, DC has a lot of emergency vehicles anywhere, but a lot of traffic travels along P Street and 22nd Street, so also prepare yourself for sirens.

Not a lot of noise from neighbors, though, just from outside the building.

FIRE ALARMS: In the year I've been here, the fire alarm has gone off at least five times.

One was real (somebody's dinner burned or something - only minor, minor damage to that unit), one was a test.

But THREE were alarms tripped by the stores downstairs.

These "false" alarms are dangerous because they desensitize you to the real alarm when it happens.

COMCAST: Comcast is the only provider for the building.

A lot of the wiring is old, so expect multiple repair visits for internet and/or cable.

Other Stuff:

No fitness room here, but they have a pool and sundeck.

Parking inside and outside is available at $200-300 / month, but usually enough parking on the street (get a permit for Zone 2 at the DMV).

Decent laundry on-site, but not in-unit.

Nice selection of casual restaurants nearby, quick walk to the metro, 10 minute walk to Georgetown, easy access to Rock Creek Parkway biking/running trail.

Grocery store is right downstairs, so good for grabbing last-minute items or random snacks.
