Just say no

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
The building houses mostly students with some middle aged and elderly tenants. The older people seem to think all of the building's problems are a result of the students which causes some tension. Sometimes when there is loud noise one of the "older" people will go knocking around on each door until they find where it's coming from. This of course disturbs everyone who isn't making noise.
The rooms themselves aren't all that bad except they must stop painting everything! The kitchens are old and the cabinets have clearly been painted over and over again. There were so many layers of paint on my cabinets that the hinges broke. There are also a thousand layers of paint in the bathroom. The window sill in my bathroom is nearly all brown and moldy because after
several months of water hitting it all of the paint melted off. It's not due to poor cleanliness, they simply paint everything they want to hide instead of fixing. After about a year or so of living here the paint started chipping everywhere, including holes that they had covered up in the wall and ceilings.
There's a decent amount of storage space compared to other apartments in the city. I had two closets, including one that was a walk in. The building has a sense of character.
But it depends, do you want a building with character or good management' The management office is located about a block away in The Potomac Park apartments. The office has a TV in it, which management is often engrossed in throughout the day. They told me after signing the lease they would give me a key to get into that building so I could go to their office whenever I needed to but that never happened. Whenever you get a package you must walk over to the building to get it (which is a pain if you're picking up something large like a computer). This proves difficult because you have to get buzzed in and they often don't answer their phone. Other times they're very slow with delivering package slips so packages can literally sit in there for days without you knowing. They also get very confused if you get more than one package at a time.
People are always moving in and out of The York due to it's proximity to GWU. You can be blessed with quiet neighbors one day and really noisy inconsiderate neighbors the next day. I had five sets of next door neighbors in the year and a half I lived here. Pray that you don't have neighbors who constantly wear high heels or loud shoes because you will hear them everywhere they go at ALL TIMES of the day and night. Management doesn't do anything about noise. My neighbor was told the neighbor's above were sent two noise violations however when looked up in the computer there wasn't documentation of any violations or complaints. The management tells you to call an emergency number in regard to late night noise claiming that a security officer will come to the property. The emergency line tells you that no, you in fact have to call the police and that nothing can be done. Some tenants have tried to approach their neighbors one on one however that just turns into more arguments. Essentially suck up any problems you have because they won't be solved by management, even if they lose one of your packages.
Another thing management doesn't care about is climate control. They set the temperature to suit the older people's needs meaning the heat is turned on in September and turned off in June. There were many times in the spring and fall when it was difficult to fall asleep because it was just that hot. Even with fans and windows open it was miserable. Obviously it depends what floor your on so watch out if you're on one of the higher levels. In addition, there was a pretty serious leak above my toilet and it took them about 12 hours to get to my room to check it out. Not good service.
The trash rooms never have trash piling up and the lobby area is cleaned every morning. There are two elevators, one of which is significantly slower than the other and gets stuck (with people inside of it) on a regular basis. Why they haven't replaced the elevator yet is beyond me but the emergency alarm is always going off. Stick to the stairs! Laundry is a hassle because you must use one of their laundry cards. The machine to put money on your card only accepts $5 and $10 bills so you always feel like you're wasting money. Not to mention there are only four machines for the whole building.
Rent is expensive and once a year there is about a 20-25% increase. You're really just paying for location because the apartments are outdated and management could really care less about their tenants.
One more thing, watch out in the summer. There is an army of roaches outside of the front door!
