I lived in Southeast DC for some of my life. I know bad areas. Greentree is bad but it isnt any worse than where I used to live. The apartment was temporary for me (a year) I just went to work and never was really bothered. There were two drug busts in my building alone but I never cared. Nobody bothered me and the dopeheads were mainly nice to me. It may sound weird but its the truth. I was afraid on some occasions but I never made a big deal of it. The only problem that persoanlly affected me was the air conditioning was trash and the insulation didnt hold any of the cold or warm air in. The little bastard kids that lived there were loud too but not all the time.
Then I moved out, and that is when I realized how bad this place was. I informed the staff that I would be on a month to month lease after my year was up. I filled out the addendum and moved out two months later. I gave a move out letter to the staff and had the property manager sign it to verifiy everything was fine. A month after I moved, I was still waiting for my security deposit. I called to find out that they still had me in the system as living in the apartment and said that I signed another year lease! Thank god I'm organized and kept everything I ever got from them. So with a week of aggitation and calling the Corporate office, the regional manager next-dayed my check and apologized for their mistake. Now here it is.....two months since I have moved and I am still getting gas bills from the gas company. Since Greentree has the meters in the leasing office, THEY HAVE TO ADVISE THE GAS COMPANY WHEN YOU MOVED FOR THE GAS TO BE TAKEN OUT OF YOUR NAME. I have called the Gas Company 4 times to take me off the bill but they give me the same deal....."The property manager has to e-mail us to verify you have moved before we can take you off the bill". Everytime I call the leasing staff, they say "we'll get right on it" and it never gets done. This has been going on for over a week and I still am considered an active resident in Greentree according to the gas company. Someone must be living there too because the bill isnt cheap either. So, to everyone who plans on living here, here are a couple of pointers....understand that this place is in a bad area and has SOME bad people living there. If you are queasy to that kind of life, then dont live here. If you can keep to yourself and not cause trouble, its not too bad. My other pointer....CAREFULLY READ AND KEEP EVERY RECEIPT, BILL, AGREEMENT, AND CORRESPONDANCE YOU CAN WHEN YOU LIVE HERE. This property is really easy to sue you when you screw up, but when you are in the right and they screw up, you will go through the aggracation of a lifetime.
