Don't Count on...

DON'T COUNT ON...
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT: many (mine and several neighbor's) cars have been vandalized, and broken into, in the parking lot. Our bikes were stolen from the laundry room, then found in the locked maintenance storage area by the police--and our name-tags were clearly in view. Hallway lights frequently failed, and were not fixed for days sometimes. Maintenance told us that they do not have keys to the deadbolt locks, but then they let themselves in when the door was double-locked, to our surprise. I didn't trust the workers to be in my apartment while I wasn't home, or while my wife was home alone.

CARING MANAGEMENT: Maintenance workers made a mistake in fixing a dishwasher, then the manager tried to charge us for water damage to the wall when it leaked, but I called the building code inspector, and he came by and told them that it was their problem.

GETTING YOUR DEPOSIT BACK: And we were never notified as to the reason why we didn't get ours back, and many of our neighbors told us of the same problem.

CLEANLINESS: They usually clean a little when they know they are going to show an apartment, but go walk through and see the dirty halls and laundry room, and the paint peeling everywhere and the mold growing on the walls, and cracks in the walls! It's a shame because the previous owners kept the common areas spotless. Now it's looking like the ghetto of North Newark. There is no pride in living there, even though it's so expensive.

WORKING APPLIANCES: Maintenance has told us that they aren't allowed to keep many parts in stock, so getting things fixed always took a long time. And Parts were mis-matched in our refrigerator which caused shelves to fall and break. And the drains in our kitchen sink and bathtub frequently backed-up.

PEACE AND QUIET: Alarms frequently go off, and they are LOUD!!!, and do not notify the fire department when they sound, I've had to call when there was a real fire, but there are many false alarms. The units were built using faulty aluminum wiring (which has since been outlawed) and circuit-breakers go off frequently, like when the toaster is on and then we used the garbage disposal! Fighting neighbors can be heard frequently. And people use the laundry room at night and kept me awake, and when I called management, they told me to tell them to stop, and to go down and pull the plug on the washers and dryers when they were running! Like I needed a confrontation with the neighbors.

A PARKING SPOT: There are not enough parking spaces, and people park in the NO Parking Zones, and this makes it difficult to get some cars out of spots when others are parked behind. Especially in winter when they plow snow into some of the parking spots.

Our rental agreement says that it converts to month-to-month after the first year, but they charged us a premium rent if we didn't agree to sign a new contract each year. They said it was to pay expenses if we moved out during the year, but we had to pay the premium for 3 years!

We didn't see any roaches, but lots of spiders--couldn't keep them out.
