Avoid this place...

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
We were initially attracted to GEV because of its location and decent-looking grounds. We never actually saw our apartment since it was pre-leased to us (ie, still occupied when we signed the lease) but shortly after moving in, we experienced several unpleasantries, which I will explain here.
The overall construction of the buildings is made of wood, and rather poor. Sound transmits easily, like no other apartment building. It is possible to hear almost every single moving step of the person above you, as well as noises from their faucets, bathroom and shower. You can easily hear the TV and radio of your neighbors. If there is someone below you, you will have to literally tiptoe around the house to avoid unsettling them. I also hear the snoring from the person above me at night (no joke).
Another issue we had was water leaking in through the ceiling and walls from above. While maintainence does come to fix it, it often takes repeated trips since the source of the problem was never fixed. Also, beware of this place since maintainence almost never gives a specific notice when they are going to come and can come in any time.
Glen Eagle has also been in the news. In one of the nearby apartments, a tenant was arrested for possessing several-truckloads amount of child-pornography, and apparently video equipment was found in his room. This apartment complex is across from the Christiana High School. Management will deny any knowledge of this, but you can probably google the story yourself. Although not the fault of Glen Eagle management, it does speak something about the clientel and environment of this place.
Another safety issue pertains to the doors. The quality of the main doors and locks is below average. Although fortunate enough to never been robbed here, take a look around and you will see that some doors have chips and scrapes around the doorknob, meaning that somebody who is not supposed to be there has been trying to break in...
Lastly, and perhaps the biggest irritation of all, is the nature of the management staff. They will entice you (as many people in business and real estate will do) but after you sign the lease, they have no appreciation for your business after signing. Specifics will not be revealed here, but they will find any reason they can to get more money and to keep your deposit. They will tell you one thing in the beginning, and then point out that the fine print in the documents say otherwise. Their mantra is- 'everything has to be in writing'. Fine print and purported 'policy' have replaced the simple human ethos of decency and honesty. The staff is not well-trained, and they can be outright rude and condescending at times when you have a legitimate issue to address with them.
Finding a decent place to live in a decent environment should not cause such trouble and give you a headache. It is for this reason that I chose to live elsewhere. If you are a working professional like me looking for a safe environment with professional management, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. If you are staying in the area for at least a few years, strongly consider taking out a mortgage and buying. Paying monthly mortgage payments instead can oftentimes save you more money than renting.
Take all this advice from someone who has moved around a lot and dealt with a lot of landlords before. This place is simply no good, and you deserve better. There are other similarly-priced developments in the area that will treat you much better. Your money and time will be better spent elsewhere.
