Not the worst in the area, not the best

The first thing to know about Valley Stream Village Apartments is that it's on the far side of a college town. This means that during the school year, this place fills up with college kids. Now, granted, the population of them is not as high as closer to campus, but be warned that you WILL hear some shouting and loud music in the parking lot. Also, there IS adequate parking here, but it's spread out. So you may have to walk across the lot to get to your apartment rather than park right outside of it, depending the time of year and day.
The walls are not paper-thin, but if your neighbors are loud, you *will* hear them (I hardly ever hear my current neighbors, but the previous tenants had noise violations called on them by other neighbors). The people that used to live upstairs sounded like they ran around as a herd of rhinocerous; I hardly ever hear the ones that live there now. My biggest issue is that the windows aren't double-hung, so they don't keep out sound very well.
Maintenance is generally acceptable; there's one friendly, competent guy on staff and I believe he has an assistant now. They're pretty good at fixing things relatively quickly; the most recent problems I've had were with the air conditioner and they were contracted to another company for warranty (we're in one of the new buildings). So my problem was with that company rather than the maintenance here.
The area's kept pretty clean and I never feel unsafe walking to my car or down the main road of the development. The staff changes here a lot, though I've never had problems with any of them.
I have to laugh at the reviews that call this place "ghetto." Have those people even looked at the other apartment complexes around here' VSV has an acceptable rate for a relatively quiet, safe area. Much more expensive and it'd make more sense to just start making house payments. Much less expensive and you're faced with either a significantly smaller apartment or living in the actual ghetto. All in all, VSV is a decent, comfortable place to live.
