Could be worse, but also could be better.

VoC is generally nice. You get a pretty nice place to live with excellent amenities for the price, such as central air, a washer/dryer, garbage disposal and dishwasher. (I'm paying about $710 a month for a 2-bedroom, 2-bath.) The complex also has a swimming pool, a decent small fitness room, and a nice clubhouse with a big TV and a pool table.

While my apartment is on the third floor, so I have no one living over my head, I've never been able to hear my next door neighbors through the walls like I did at the last place I lived. There is sufficient parking--I never have to park too far from my building. Also, the complex has sent notices stating there will be a new guard in the renovated security gate soon.

In the meantime, the trash compactor (the ONLY one for the entire complex...eww) is not compacted/emptied enough. Unless you continue to hound the office with phone calls, personal visits, and letters, your maintenance needs will take forever to be addressed, unless you start involving Delaware Tenant Code standards.

Mischievous teenage kids tend to roam the neighborhoods, but are more of an annoyance than a problem--however, my roommate's car stereo was stolen from his locked car. (Nothing else was stolen and there was no damage to the car...somebody took advantage of a window that was open about half an inch.) But you'll probably have a bunch of bored kids wandering around anywhere you might choose to live.

Luckily, the office staff is always friendly, and they try their best to be as helpful as possible. I think maybe the VoC would benefit from hiring some extra maintenance staff, a security guard, and getting some more trash dumpsters.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's a "ghetto palace" or "the worse place I've ever lived", but there are improvements that definitely need to be made. I can tell they are trying. They just need to find a way to succeed.
