it doesn't get much better

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2003

I moved here in April of 2003. Here are just a few random thoughts I have on this place...

GOOD: When I moved in, I got a month and a half of free rent, plus $200 after that for signing a lease in 24 hours. Payola!

BAD: I pay $740 a month for a very small apartment. It's like a studio with an extra wall, really.

GOOD: Got a full-sized washer/dryer combo, though. For the first time since I moved out of mommy and daddy's house, I can finally wash my underwear in the privacy of my own home. And $740 is good for having a washer/dryer. I know... I looked.

BAD: This place must be made out of lead. Try hanging a picture in the wall. just try it. I have about a dozen bent nails to prove it can't be done. (This might be considered a good thing if you fear terrorists attacks and/or nuclear armageddon.)

GOOD: Pet policy is good. It allowed me to keep two cats with no rent increase. They double the deposit, but I consider it getting a nice little surprise back when I move out.

BAD: There's a button outside my door that may have, in past years, functioned as a doorbell. It is now, however, just a button.

GOOD: The office staff is great. I would let any of them babysit my underaged kids.

BAD: Parking stinks... although I consider it a good way to practice my parallel parking on a regular basis.

GOOD: The maintanence staff kicks your butt's butt. I've never had that wasn't fixed within 24 hours of a phone call. Never. (Case in point: First day here, the toilet clogged. A call brought a plunger attached to a friendly maintanence man in 15 minutes. The next day, the office person I signed my lease with called to make sure the toilet situation was handled. Now that's what I call service!) I would definitely also let any of them date my daughter... if I, um, had one.

BAD: Occasionally, Wilmington will reek of America's thriving chemical industry. But that smell means jobs! It also means stock up on scented candles, incense, and Glade plug-ins!

GOOD: The landscaping is pretty decent. Nice flowers and stuff, although the shrub outside my door could use a little trim.

BAD: Only two trash compaters on the whole grounds. I certainly don't like transporting my nasty coffee rinds in my nice car.

GOOD: Easy access to 495 and 95. It's right there! I can see it!

BAD: I can't think of any more bad things, so let's just continue with the good stuff.

GOOD: Nice view of the Delaware River. Even chemical factories look kind of pretty when they're all lit up at night.

GOOD: There's a gym and a pool. They both look very nice, but I'm much too doughy to use either.

GOOD: The laundry facilities also look very nice with comfy couches and cable TV, but obviously I haven't used them either. (I'm not dirty! Read above!)

GOOD: I've heard a bit about the crime, but there's a rent-a-cop that drives around all night. While this doesn't stop crime, I know these people were hired recently (they weren't here when I moved in. I know... I asked) it at least shows that the management recognizes that there's a problem and is making some sort of effort to rectify it. One could only hope for that much.

GOOD: Keeping my apartment warm or cool is no problem at all with central air/heating. I've lived without a working thermostat for so long, I never want to go back!

GOOD: No sales tax! (Yes, this has nothing to do with the apartment complex, but that in itself makes Delaware a cool state to live in.)

GOOD: Lead walls (see above) means I almost never hear my neighbors. I'm not even sure I HAVE neighors! It's just that quiet! Wow!

GOOD: All GE appliances. Which, if you have some sort of undying love of GE, is a good thing. Me, I'm comfortable with it. Except for the microwave... it's so high-tech, I'm convinced it's smarter than me. Just look at it... sitting there, eyeing me, daring me to microwave something.

Um, that's all I can think of. Feel free to email me if you have questions, but I must say not only have I lived in much worse, but I looked around and couldn't find much better.
