I was going to move in but the day after I signed the lease was told by my employer that I would be transfered up north. Went back the next day (less than a day had gone by) and was told that I could not cancel my contract and would have to pay penalties. I tried to explain the situation but the manager, who had acted like a sweetheart when I met her, became aggresive and mean. I ended paying about $2,000 in early termination penalties (about 2 months of rent) without having even set a foot inside the apartment or having even touched the keys. I am pretty sure they re-rented my apartment soon thereafter but the manager would not tell me. Will be suing for some of my $ back since I just found out that this is illegal and a violation of Florida's Consumer Collection Practices Act.

Legally, they can only charge you until the apartment is re-rented. Any rent charged to you after that is considered double-rent and illegal in Palm Beach County. You should also ask your attorney about their rights in charging you if you did not physically have possession of the apartment. I work in the industry and even though you signed a contract, if you did not have possession, I believe there is a fine line between law and just plain customer service. You definitely should have a good case. Good luck!
