A LIVING NIGHTMARE - DO NOT RENT HERE

From: -Anonymous-
Date posted: 2/7/2006
Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

We moved here from out of state and thought Marina Palms would be a good place to live because it was close to the beach. Very quickly we figured out we made a BIG mistake which we now regret more than anything we have ever done.

The management is rude and unwilling to help. They do not care about any of their residents and any problem(s) you have they take at least a week to respond, if they do anything at all. The maintenance crew is unprofessional and lazy. They do nothing other than drive around in their golf carts. So far they have not done any quality work on anything that has needed repair or replacement in our apartment. I do not trust them anymore than I would trust a thief.

The apartment was filthy and covered in mold when we moved in. We had to clean for days before we could comfortably unpack and begin "living" there. It was infested with roaches which we complained about NUMEROUS times. We were afraid to eat out of our own kitchen. The first night we moved in we had a crack head knocking on our door at 3am looking for someone we had never heard of.

We had to repaint the bathroom with Kilz and replace all of the caulking because it was molded. The bathroom ceiling was sagging and appears as if it could fall at any given moment. We found a used pair of underwear behind the toilet that we had to dig out with a pair of scissors and throw away.

The closet doors do not stay on track and you have to pick them up and put them back on track every time you want to get into your closet. They call these apartments "remodeled" but the most remodeling I've seen is new light fixtures and they might (I emphasize MIGHT) have vacuumed before we moved in.

The A/C unit took 3 days of constant running to cool the apartment off to a comfortable 75. We still cannot turn it up or down too much or else it gets extremely hot in the apartment or it gets extremely cold. We have never had a utility bill this expensive. The vent that is SUPPOSED to have a filter behind it had trash and cigarette butts hidden behind, which we had to clean out and use for air freshener.

The front door had gaps in the bottom which we complained about light and bugs coming in because that meant air was getting out and could be a possible explanation for our outrageous utility bills. They had to replace the entire door frame because it was cracked all the way down. They replaced the door and the door frame, but left the wood bare. They didn't put a primer, finish, paint...nothing. I had to call and request them to paint the bare wood so we wouldn't get splinters. It looks like a child did the painting, in fact a kindergartener could paint our doorway better than the maintenance people did. It looks worse than it did before they painted it, I should have kept my mouth shut.

Our neighbors scream at each other constantly and it has elevated to physical fights. The neighbors above us stomp and play their music at such levels we can hear the songs being played. We listen to it until we go to bed at night and when we get up early the next morning, its still going on. I cant help but wonder, do these people sleep or have jobs' After several complaints and no change, we gave up. Our neighbors allowed their trash to sit on their front porch for OVER A MONTH and even after I complained, nothing was done for over a week. Less than a week later, there was another bag of trash that sat there for another month. The neighbors above us let their trash sit on their porch for so long our walkway smelled like a trash dump and had puddles of liquid that had leaked from their trash and dripped down to our entry way.

Our hot water heater leaked so much it soaked through the wall and into our entry way inside the apartment. With a flashlight we found black mold growing all over the wall and the floor behind the hot water heater. The baseboards in the entry way turned black with mold and we had to use bleach to clean mold off the back of a bench we kept in the entry way. Mold had grown up the wall and all over the back of our bench. I asked about the mold so they used a can of white spray paint and said it would kill the mold. Well I dont know who told them that would work, but they were lied to because our baseboards have begun to turn black with mold again.

Overall the complex grounds are trashy and are not kept well. Portions of the fence are missing and there is graffiti on another portion of it. A shack which is kept for the "maintenance" crew has appliances sitting outside around this shack. The trash on the other side of the complex PILES up and it's embarrassing to live there and it smells when you drive by. When a water main had to be dug up they left the bushes (and all of the dirt) laying on our walkway, which after it rained turned to mud. It's been a week and they still have not touched the mess they left and we are sick of looking at it.

We don't even want to have people over because we are so ashamed of where we live. Our cars have been hit while being parked over night and one has even been broken into. It's pretty bad when the Sheriff's department is telling you it's a ghetto and dangerous place to live and telling you to move out. We do not feel safe there and have checked into breaking our lease. Nobody should have to live in fear in their own home and a home should not be so stressful. Save yourself the stress, the anxiety, the emotion and the money of living hereIm sure living on 14th street has got to be better than living here.
