Not good experience

I should have listened to the advice from a person who was a representative of another non-related rental apartment complex. I had told her of the complexes I had looked at and was considering renting from. Sheridan Ocean Club was on my list as I thought they were very reasonable. She had told me that her sister had lived there on the top floor and when it rained, her apartment got soaked which caused damage to her furniture. She said that the management kept claiming that they fixed the problem, but she continued to have the problems until she moved out. Well I thought that she was just telling me that so I would not go there and rent from "the competition". I went ahead and signed a year lease for an apartment on the top floor (I believe it was the third floor). Sure enough, when we had our heavy rains, I noticed some of the inside walls becoming stained (water damage). I called the management company who said they?d fix it right away. I had moved my wall unit away from the walls until they assured me that everything was OK and the roof was fixed. Three months later, we had another big deluge of heavy rains and this time, the stains or marks on the walls had spread tremendously. I had been away for a few days during that rain, so when I returned, I saw that the wall stains were really bad and spreading, and when walking barefeet near the sliding door, the carpet felt very cool. That?s when I realized that the rain went all the way to the floor and wet the carpeting. I guess from the dampness, I had a little "growth" that I would assume is some kind of mold or mushroom coming out of carpet at the baseboards in one corner. My wood and imitation wood furniture had absorbed some of that moisture and "swole" up at the bottom. I almost kicked myself because I had moved them all back thinking everything would be fine. All the management company could tell me is that they had the company come out twice already since I?d lived there, to fix the leaking. They obviously did not fix it or they hired incompetent repairmen that had no idea what they were doing. Now I realize that living in a rental, Sheridan Ocean Club would assume no liability to damages to my furniture. However, seeing that I had reported this at least a couple of times before, they should have at least help to pay for the repair of my furniture. Instead, all I got was an explanation that they are not liable, that they will use another roofing company to do the repairs (too late!), and that they?d give me a small discount off of the next month?s rent. It was better than nothing, but I personally feel that they should have done more for me. My advice if you should live there, is to not rent a top floor, esp. in the older buildings. The other complaint is the no-see-ums which ate you alive as soon as you went outside. If you can tolerate the noseeums and live on the second or first floor, you may be alright there. It?s a great location and to be fair, the staff was very nice. I just think they messed up with hiring incompetent repair people, and continuing to use them. For the Maintenance Service Quality rating, I selected "Poor". This is only because of the rain/leaking problem I had. This may not be related to their regular maintenance crew.. I do not know who the management had used the first few times.
