Rather Expensive Ghetto Living for those not on Public Assistance.

I've lived here for over a year and am now looking for a house. Living in Banana Cay apartments has completely soured me on living in an apartment again. The neighbors are loud at best, and can be downright obnoxious. This complex accepts section 8 and HUD housing recipients so the various problems that come along with a low-income demographic can be seen here. There is a small pool, but it's absolutely filthy, and has 15-20 people in it at all times. There's a basketball court with broken nets and hoops, and you'll often see large groups of people of varying ages hanging around on it at all hours of the day and night. The children and adults communicate with each other by screaming across the parking lot - at any hour. The appliances in the apartment are quite old - perhaps 20 years or so, and have problems with rust and reliability. There are no laundry facilities in this complex, so you'll have to purchase or rent your own washer and dryer, or take trips to the laundromat. I've had a severe insect problem twice, when for weeks what seemed like termites were crawling all over my counters and walls no matter how much I cleaned. The apartment entranceways and stairs are unreasonably dirty and the handrails are shaky. I've had to contact the maintanance staff numerous times to fix countless things in my apartment. The windows in this apartment are terrible. They are difficult to open, won't stay up, won't lock, etc...absolutely awful. My front door has major pry marks on it, and the trim is half hanging off on the inside from someone trying to force their way in while a chain lock was on the door. I don't feel safe at night in this complex. It reminds me of a ghetto. Too bad because the apartments are spacious, but the management really needs to rethink the type of people they rent to...and get some new appliances!

P.S. It's worth noting that the management REFUSED to let me view my apartment before giving my deposit and signing a lease. They let me view other apartments, but not the one I would be living in. BIG HINT!
