Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2004
I was encouraged to write a review by a resident of the Falls at Marina Bay who viewed my post at the Falls of Pembroke, which is owned and managed by the same people. This is a copy of the same post I placed in the falls of pembroke section, but feel free to visit there and read all the other reviews.
We began living at the Falls of Pembroke in August 2003. By December 2003 we had had it with the Falls.
We had tried to get many things repaired in our apartments since August 2003 when we moved in. Despite letters written to the consumer affairs division and the better business bureau, nothing happened. Several times, we took time out of work to await countertop replacement only to find that no one showed up. The apartment smelled like smoke since day one (no one in my family smokes) and despite numeorus reports when we moved in, the "ozone machine" promised to us never came.
My 14 month old developed asthma in October 2003 and I do believe it is directly related to the smoke in the apartment. Since moving out in March 2004, he has had no attacks. My own asthma has cleared uyp significantly since then as well.
We had reported electrical problems since day one and no one came by to repair it. In December 2003, our power went out and in one section of the apartment and we could not get it back on. It took two days for the electrician to come by and by this time, we had corrected the problem ourselves. However, my husband made the electrician check all the outlets and the panel. It seems that we were right about the wiring in the apartment. The wires in the panel box were sparking. Further, the light in my son's room and in our bedroom was flickering, as well as the one in the hallway. My husband took video and pictures for proof. We called the Fire Department and had the chief electrical inspector for the city come out (really nice guy). He cited them several times, not only for problems in our home, but for code violations throughout the property.
At this point, my husband went to the office to speak to the people there with a witness (always bring a witness, tape recorder, etc). He told them that because they had not honored our lease we would be vacating the apartment in March 2004 without paying the 1 month rent penalty. He also sent them a certified letter indicating our intentions. They never responded to our letter. We moved out of our apartment as we intended in March 2004. We videotaped every nook and cranny in that apartment to ensure that they had nothing to hold over our heads.
In June 2004, we received a letter from a collection agency trying to collect $1526 stating that we owed them one months rent and that we left the apartment in a terrible condition. Our one month of rent doesn't even match the amount they are collecting for. They have done this in the past. While we lived there we received two notices asking us to pay an erroneous amount or we would be evicted in 3 days. I have cashed checks for every month that we lived in that apartment.
My husband put the video on DVD and sent it to the collection agency along with a letter letting them know that we have no intention of paying a penny to these people and stating further that they kept our deposit despite the fact that we left the apartment better than we found it. We expect to continue sending letters and disputing informaiton on our credit report until they eventually sue us, at which time, we will countersue for alot more than $1526. If you are interested in a class action law suit, please feel free to write to me at my e-mail address: westie_lvr@hotmail.com
As for the con artist (see falls of pembroke review dated October 2003) that someone actually defended earlier, he was obviously found guilty of grand theft, but managed to get 3 years probation instead. You can view his photograph and information if you have his name (which I cannot post) at the website for the FL Department of Corrections.
If you read this before renting, don't do it here or at the Falls of Pembroke. Your experience will be miserable guaranteed. If you are already living there, document everything, write letters, videotape and tape record your interactions as necessary to insure you don't get screwed.
